Description of my 2015 book on ISIS, which made an accidental and unfortunate blockbuster in Japan, caught in the middle of the political controversy surrounding the hostage crisis in Syria.

  2. Isis appoints Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi as its new leader, Emir al-Moemineen (the emir of the faithful). So both the spokesman and the new leader of ISIS claim descent from the Meccan tribe of Quraysh. The spokesman asks followers to pledge allegiance to the new caliph

  4. Just in. ISIS media outlet, which usually limits its productions to news about its leader or spokesman and top-level events, is announcing something soon.

  5. No specifics given about who these two leaders are. But Baghdadi’s successor claims descent from the Hashemite clan of Prophet Mohammed; his title includes that. The spokesman’s kunya only says “Qurashi” so he’s from the bigger tribe of Mohammed, not necessarily the same clan.

  10. This is appalling: Beinart gets applause for saying 'OK, let's define antisemitism in a way that suits the far-left & anti-Israel-activists. He's also lying when he claims there's no consensus in the US Jewish community about whether anti-Zionism is antisemitism.

  11. So thinks that delegitimizing Zionism is just fine... As if that is conducive to peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Because delegitimization of the Jewish state's right to exist was so conducive to peace in 1948, and 1967, 1973, and the 2000s ☠💣 🤦🏻‍♂️👎

  12. This year's conference made something clear: On Israel, there are now two Democratic parties.

  13. Trump’s aversion to military confrontation is giving Iran the upper hand in the Middle East, John Hannah writes.

  18. The name of the dog that participated in the al-Baghdadi raid is Conan. And it looks like he will be making a visit to the White House soon.

  19. Full statement on Israel's new foreign investment c'tee, in response to US pressure re China. To be clear, Israel is NOT creating an equivalent of CFIUS. New c'tee will be "advisory" and designed to "assist regulators." No decision-making capability, at least as described.

  20. UAE withdraws its troops from Aden, hands control to Saudi Arabia

  21. Downed or not, the real question is whether Iran and Hizbollah would come to think that the new limitations on Israel's aerial operations above Lebanon, along with the domestic upheaval in the country, present an opportunity to advance the production of high-precision missiles.

  22. Take a moment to scroll through this stunning infographic that illustrates how Turkey, Russia, & Assad carved up northern Syria after Trump gave the green light to Turkey’s invasion, abandoned the Kurds, & forced US troops to retreat under fire.

  24. The Egyptian government has arrested more than 4,300 people since the small, scattered protests last month, "including more than 100 foreigners, journalists and even children" as young as 11.

  25. How Trump's top advisers, from John Bolton and James Jeffrey on down, pushed a doomed strategy in northern Syria—though striking that this says barely a word about the Obama administration, which began this deluded policy in the first place.

  26. Breaking with Turkey is the biggest geostrategic mistake the US could make. Trump seems to be the only thing stopping the break, but I have stopped making this case to my American friends. I would first have to explain to them what Turkey is and who has time for that?
