#Benedict XVI’s letter in #clergysexualabuse is deeply flawed. The analysis of postconciliar developments in moral theology, ecclesiology, sexual ethics is profoundly troubling.https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/full-text-of-benedict-xvi-the-church-and-the-scandal-of-sexual-abuse-59639…

Many of these claims sound similar to Chad Pecknold’s presentation @CatholicUniv a few weeks back. #healingthebreach

The willingness to blame a permissive culture and progressive theology for a problem that is internal and structural is stunning.

Though there is a positive reference to @Pontifex at the end of #Benedict's letter, their analyses of root causes of the crisis could not be more different.

For Francis,"To say ‘no’ to abuse is to say an emphatic ‘no’ to all forms of clericalism.” Letter to the People of God, August 2018

A man and church deeply lost in philosophy and ancient theology talks about protection of the accused and protection of the church but not once about protection of the weak and vulnerable. The idea that the Vatican can police its self with these attitudes entrenched is nonsense!

Agree. Seems this plays in the register of much hierarchical thinking today. Prescinding from the theology, it lacks sociological acuity and self-examination.

It’s easier to blame the times than taking responsibility, apologise and take action. Who knows, maybe he was implicated too.

That #Benedict XVI's thinking is deeply flawed is clearly evident by the simple fact that these problems did not suddenly arise after the 1960s. Perhaps his retirement for "health" reasons (mental?) is a greater blessing than we ever knew.

He retired before it came out he knew it was going on and covered it up.

Outrageous that Benedict would even act as if the church didn’t have a serious problem before the Vatican Council! It’s very sad that he would spread such nonsense. Or propaganda.

And You only have to go back in recent history to wonder what the hell was going on that they took investigations of abuse in house in 1922, They changed the Canons to silence anyone speaking about it with excommunication. Kieran Tapsell "Potiphar's Wife" 2014
