    And yes, this is a new low point in the relationship between the US and Turkey. The timing - October 29 is Turkey's most important national holiday - could not have been worse. Expect a furious response from Ankara. Erdogan is due in DC on November 13. Not going to be pretty.

    The genocide is a matter of almost universal consensus among historians. But this resolution has much less to do with historical truth than with the sorry state of US-Turkey relations. Politics was why Congress never recognized the genocide; politics was why it did so today.

    And then there’s that. The agreement with Russia applies only to areas outside the 120 km zone between Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn. Turkey expects the YPG to withdraw completely from that zone by 22:00 local time... meaning 3 minutes from now.

    Today’s agreement with Russia is independent of the Turkey-US deal, under which all PKK/YPG terrorists are required to leave the safe zone. The terrorists have another 15 minutes... ⏰
