In May the same local faction HTS claimed the killing of the previous Wali of Idlib, Abu Suleyman al Iraqi (from Iraq and yet he was leading the activities in Idlib). Again: allegedly a "Wali". So, the Islamic State is there in Idlib and suffers losses like everywhere

The network of the Islamic State in Idlib was (is?) strong. In August a local faction, HTS, claimed the killing of their "Wali of Idlib" Abu Abdu Shadid – the presence of a Wali (governor) means he leads at least a network of multiple cells

This would be consistent with past operations – US Special Forces trying to get Abu Bakr al Baghdadi without destroying the body because they need a positive confirmation

Just to be clear, Idlib was hostile territory for sure but at this point there were no more non-hostile areas for Baghdadi. You really think Al Anbar or the Euphrate's corridor were more friendly and less dangerous for the leader of the Islamic State?

This is interesting, but we are in the realm of speculation for now. A compound built in 2018, same site of the operation to (IF CONFIRMED – BIG IF) kill Abu Bakr al Baghdadi

Interesting. Witnesses say there was a fight between the security detail of Abu Bakr al Baghdadi and the US Special forces, videos from there show men clearly killed in a firefight and big craters of bombs

IF CONFIRMED – BIG IF – Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was killed circa five kilometers from the Turkish border (near Barisha) in a territory in a territory under the control of groups hostile to him

Waiting for confirmation, there is nothing certain at the moment: a "senior terrorist leader" who could be Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was allegedly killed in a raid of US Special Forces in Idlib province (Idlib province!!)

U.S. military is taking several dozen High Value Islamic State detainees out of Kurdish-run prisons in Syria as Turkey invades the region. Problem is: you really don't know how many "High Value" ones you have, mingled amongst the crowd of common detainees

Best turn of events for the Islamic State in Syria. They are not in standby and have just released this picture related to an attack which allegedly killed 17 Syrian soldiers in a central province

Like it or not, the SDF were keeping their foot on the Islamic State's throat in Eastern Syria. Starting from today the SDF are exposed to airstrikes and the next phase begins. Even if the Turkish intervention is limited, will distract most of SDF resources

The death of Malik al Khazmi, former Wali of Wilayah Barqa, in a hideout in the Fezzan region in 2019 would be a confirmation

So, this thread covers how after the defeat in Sirte and the obliteration of the Wilayah Tarabulus, the people of the Wilayah Barqa who fled Benghazi are reorganizing the Islamic State in Libya and leading the raids from the deep South

Malik al Khazmi allegedly is responsible for the Zliten bombing in 2016, worst terrorist attack in Libya – a water truck rigged with explosives got access to the police academy in Zliten, more than 60 killed

Anyway, Malik al Khazmi is (was?) top tier. Here in an excellent article you read about him recruiting in 2014 the first nucleus of the Islamic State in Libya and then leading the first attempt at coming back in 2017

Abu Muadh al Iraqi obviously is Abdel Qader al Najdi, the elusive Iraqi Emir of the Islamic State in Libya. So, he fled Sirte with Malik al Khazmi in 2016. Maybe they are still together in the deep South. Maybe U.S. drones were after a bigger target and hit al Khazmi instead

Fawzi al Ayyat, a judge of the Islamic State captured in Sirte, said that "Abu Muadh al Iraqi and Malik al Khazmi were ordered by Islamic State Central to flee Sirte with a group of militants ahead of the US-led campaign and headed to Libya’s southern region"
