Last week, with the help of Mary Roach's fascinating book Gulp, I tackled a question surely on the back of everybody's mind: Can you eat via your anus?

This week, again guided by Gulp, I do the disgusting and flip the question. Ladies and gentlemen, restrain your gag reflexes.

Can you poop via your mouth?

Sketchy websites, questionable YouTube videos, and a hilarious episode of South Park all present evidence pointing to "yes." What's more, the American Heritage Medical Dictionary defines a condition dubbed fecal vomiting: "The vomiting of fecal matter that has been drawn into the stomach from the intestine by spasmodic contractions of the gastric muscles." The term is even used various times in the medical literature.

The answer to the question, however, seems to be a nuanced "no."

Indeed, fecal vomiting is a genuine condition, rarely occurring in cases of severe constipation in which the colon is completely full of feces. The vomit, however, doesn't actually contain what we recognize as poop, which comes from the colon. It contains liquid from the small intestine, ejected in with the help of powerful, reverse contractions of muscles in the small intestine and esophagus.

"A well-formed stool does not exit the upper end of the colon," Roach writes.

To the few unfortunates afflicted with fecal vomiting, the difference may seem borderline semantic. After all, liquid from the small intestine can be darker in color and doesn't exactly smell like roses.

Strangely enough, there are a couple dozen reports of actual feces being expelled from the mouth, however all of them come from the early days of modern medicine and are highly dubious. The reports prompted one skeptical physician, Dr. Gustav Langmann, to put a claimant to the test. In 1889, he undertook the care of a female patient who witnesses reported had passed stools via the mouth. At some point during the woman's hospital stay, nurses discovered "some hard feces, wrapped in paper" under her pillow. Ewwww. Case closed.

Was taken into hospital on emergency, and after excellent care and treatment it was discovered I had colitis. My stomach is beginning to go down, but still pretty weak. Can you vomit poop - YES I DID

She had not had a normal bowl movement of any amount but a couple small"marbles" for around 2 weeks or so. She had been given stool softeners and a couple enemas duing this time with no success from the patience having a movement. The doctor odered an enema with a new solution that was suppose to break down even the hardest stool. As the nurse was administering the enema, she noted that she was squeezing and the solution was not entering and she knew there was not a block any kind from the enema so she tried to squeeze again and was really hard to squeeze . She looked at the patients face to make sure she was not hurting from the procedure and at the same time as she was squeezing a formed fece started to slowly exit the mouth. The nurse stopped squeezing the fece stopped exiting the mouth the nurse in shock decided to squeeze again to see if the fece would exit again from the mouth and it started to move out the mouth again. It was "POOP"... so I know this to be true. My daughter is a nurse and she was this nurse that was administering the enema. My daughter was kinda freaked that this could even happen.

      • This happened to my mother who was battling stomach cancer and had an intestinal blockage. We did not know this prior to her taking many stool softeners and yes, he did vomit fecal matter in a more formed state, not like diarrhea. It was very traumatic and only days prior we had been giggling about when a doctor told us this could happen. IT IS REAL.

        • I can swear that I once vomited feces it smelled like feces and tasted different than regular vomit. I'm on several acid reducers because the reflux disease is so bad.
