  6. Kurdish fighters must retreat 20 miles from TR border. TR troops will be allowed 6 miles inside Syr to conduct joint patrols w RU forces along the length of the border region, & TR will be allowed oversight of a deeper pocket of land 20miles around Tal-Abiad & Ras al-Ain

    So basically this seems to be where N/E Syria is headed on the current trajectory. Blue bits will be like Manbij but with Russians, or Bizarro Idleb. Stumbling blocks: Russian responsibility-averseness; Turkish maximalism; YPG intransigence; SAA capability; Trump; general chaos.

    What this deal will do, if it works, is to return all remaining Kurdish-majority regions in Syria to Assad's control. On the up side for civilians, that will likely prevent new Efrin-type ethnic purges. On the down side, being Kurdish under the Baath isn't much fun either.

    Erdogan got half of what he wanted from Putin today. He secured a 30 km deep zone that is off limits to the YPG- But he wanted to stretch for the entire border from Euphrates to the Iraqi border to be able to send back millions of refugees- he did not get that.

    Putin-Erdogan: Assad Regime takes entire border region outside area given away in US-TR “ceasefire” last week. Turkey patrols to 10km. No outposts. Putin stood up to Erdogan more than Trump. Bottom line: Fate of historic Kurd areas (Kobani) now entirely in hands of Assad/Russia.

  17. The Turkey-Russia deal for northern Syria. Russia stands up to Turkey, containing its expansionist momentum. Joint patrols RU/TR, much like the US/TR patrols. Turkey kept to 10K. Syria will have Kobani area, protecting Kurds in area from worst fate.
