Should Russian military police get Nobel Peace Prize? They have been key to conflict management in SYR. “In any awkward situation, deploy military police,” one could joke, if it were not such an effective tool. Used b/n ISR-IRAN, Sunni opp & YPG-Turks http://almon.co/39u7 pic.twitter.com/gEKXK6ZAye

“We do not trust Russia,” said Hisham al-Skeif, a spokesman for the Turkish-backed Arab factions. "I am happy the dream of an autonomous Kurdish region is over. This is a great pleasure for us even if we have not achieved everything we want,”https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/23/world/middleeast/turkey-russia-syria.html …

the Turkish defense ministry said it would not advance beyond an area of 900 square miles that Turkish-led forces have seized from Kurdish control since invading 2 weeks ago. “At this stage, there is no further need to conduct a new operation outside the present operation area,”

Russia avoided labeling the YPG as terrorists. Point two vaguely addresses the mutual commitment of Russia and Turkey to “fighting terrorism in all of its forms and manifestations.” In its version, RU used the acronym KOS, or “Kurdish Self-Defense Units.”

So basically this seems to be where N/E Syria is headed on the current trajectory. Blue bits will be like Manbij but with Russians, or Bizarro Idleb. Stumbling blocks: Russian responsibility-averseness; Turkish maximalism; YPG intransigence; SAA capability; Trump; general chaos.pic.twitter.com/BpPz8KZAkL

What this deal will do, if it works, is to return all remaining Kurdish-majority regions in Syria to Assad's control. On the up side for civilians, that will likely prevent new Efrin-type ethnic purges. On the down side, being Kurdish under the Baath isn't much fun either.

Erdogan got half of what he wanted from Putin today. He secured a 30 km deep zone that is off limits to the YPG- But he wanted to stretch for the entire border from Euphrates to the Iraqi border to be able to send back millions of refugees- he did not get that.

Putin-Erdogan: Assad Regime takes entire border region outside area given away in US-TR “ceasefire” last week. Turkey patrols to 10km. No outposts. Putin stood up to Erdogan more than Trump. Bottom line: Fate of historic Kurd areas (Kobani) now entirely in hands of Assad/Russia.

The Turkey-Russia deal for northern Syria. Russia stands up to Turkey, containing its expansionist momentum. Joint patrols RU/TR, much like the US/TR patrols. Turkey kept to 10K. Syria will have Kobani area, protecting Kurds in area from worst fate.
