It could lead to a dangerous confrontation. But if managed wisely it could set a precedent for the army reclaiming sovereignty in spaces literal and figurative where it doesn’t have any. Certainly it shows a desire to allow peaceful protests to continue undisturbed.

Hezbollah now reportedly saying the men on mopeds are not members of the group. This distancing probably indicates the senses the winds are shifting and that popular anger raging across Lebanon against all political parties, is real and includes them.

In the past, the appearance of thugs on mopeds waving flags has scared away peaceful protestors, crowds disperse because it spells trouble. It usually means protests peter out and pressure against the prevailing system lets up.

Protests of last few days have felt very different from past in their size and diversity and unity. On day 4 of Lebanon’s uprising, this episode seems to confirm a new phase is starting in the country.
