Description of my 2015 book on ISIS, which made an accidental and unfortunate blockbuster in Japan, caught in the middle of the political controversy surrounding the hostage crisis in Syria.https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/biblioplaza/en/D_00222.html …

Opinion as a Kurd and as an SDF member: SDF must call for immediate withdrawal of all US troops from northern Syria asap. Without US interference SDF and SAA can at least protect Kurdish lives and prevent Kurdish cities from being ethnically cleansed.https://twitter.com/JackDetsch_ALM/status/1186070107409309696 …

After calls for a "millions march" in Sudan tomorrow, a national committee has finally been established to investigate the June 3rd massacre. It will be chaired by prolific human rights defender and lawyer, Nabeel Adeeb.

Vast increase in numbers in Downtown Beirut—probably fourfold compared to yesterday at the same time. Amazingly, Lebanon’s national unity government, in just a few years, seems to be rallying against itself a broader cross section of society than even Syrian occupation did

The unwisdom of this gesture is profound. If any single factor convinced the Turks to intervene, it was the perception in Ankara that the US military identified with the PKK.https://twitter.com/jenanmoussa/status/1185872659466412032 …

Iconic photo by
@Delilsouleman. As the last U.S. troops pull out of Syria, an American soldier wears a YPJ emblem on his uniform as a sign of solidarity with the Kurdish ally they are leaving behind. Also, to really get clarity, you'd probably need to ask a follow-up question, namely that if they're "not religious," do they either want to be religious or do they think they *should* become religious?

We have no way of knowing how the question was asked in Arabic, since the battery of survey questions has only so far been released in English

The big new BBC Arabic poll has gotten some misleading coverage. BBC is calling this the rise of the "non-religious"
The problem is the common Arabic translation of "not religious" would be مش متدين or لست متدين which doesn't have quite the same implication as "not religious"pic.twitter.com/hwB5a7Tnnk

Over the past 9 months I dealt with dramatic crises in the MidEast touching the US news cycle: LNA reaching Tripoli, Libya, Iran missiles in the region, Aden battle, Ikhwan uprising in Egypt, protests in Baghdad, Kurds drama with Turkey & demos in Lebanon. And it's not yet 2020

@AlMonitor: The "majority" of 1,000 US troops departed Syria today in ground convoys, leaving American forces to conduct "more dangerous" cross-border raids to root out ISIS, a senior US official said.
