I know there are a couple people interested in asteroid mining on /pol/ right now, I guess you could count me among them.

There are obviously massive amounts of platinum, nickel, and other metals locked away in these asteroids. Extremely valuable right now. But won't flooding the global markets with abundant platinum erase the metal's value completely? Won't asteroid-mining companies naturally be driven to a Jewy De Beers-style operation, where they closely control the flow of metals from their asteroids to keep the price up?

Or else go bankrupt?

Also, because there is no Space Travellator up, general space thread?

I'm all for Space Mining tho, and yes, the increase in materials gained will lower the value a little bit, but it will allow for more production. So in the whole scheme of things, it really won't matter.

However, we need to establish a better/more efficient way to get to space and transport materials back to Earth.

I think once we establish a docking station/ship factory in space we will be much closer to actually making this dream become reality.

and to add to this..

I think the best way to go about mining asteroids is through remote control/drones through a set of relay stations.

Problem with space mining is not cost, but international law that allows your country to take all resources you mined without compensating you.

What is more likely is that we will see an explosion in space based construction. Tourism and solar power would be the chief industries of the day. All these projections sort of assume that gold would be worth 'trillions' if gold and other precious metals are made abundant. Gold is only valuable because of it's scarcity.

However, if we do get a non-Jew style mine going, quality electronics would be a lot cheaper.

Does anyone know if the stuff they make batteries out of (lithium) is found on asteroids?

Dear Lord that just pisses me off. We are DOING NOTHIng in space yet there is every reason to do SOMETHING there. Why the FUCKING are we not building o'neil colonies already heck if we had an on going Manhattan like project for space think of what could be done!

Asteroid mining… lol

Not gonna happen until travel to space is cheaper than an airline. Ever hear of anybody mining on earth and transporting it with planes? yeah no

Industry can't happen is space without a space elevator.

There's no way it could be economical to use rockets and reentry vehicles to handle the massive traffic involved with transporting the inputs and outputs from Earth.

Whoever builds one first is going to explode in economic activity. Probably why Japan is looking into it.

obvious fucking shill thread given the combination of literal pie in the sky and the fact that it will never happen as long as our priorities are so screwed up down here on earth as it.

unless you can point out a genuine application and impact it has on modern day politics, sage and /thread.
