I used a combination of ImageOptim and PictureViewer on my Mac. I was going to use Gulp or Grunt but I am not sure if you all use that.

Spent about an hour last night and today, now I know how its done, I think its just a case of fixing the max-width to match the right height. Feels like the correct approach to me.
