    It turns out Turkey was screwed by both the US and Russia: former used Turkish offensive to get out of Syria, latter used it to retrieve SDF-held territories for Assad minus a handful of border towns.

    Once US was on its way out, both Turkish offensive and regime return were a matter of certainty. There was no credible scenario in which the Autonomous Administration was to survive post-US withdrawal. Only question was how much would go to the regime, and how much to Turkey.

    Independent variable here is US withdrawal, which was happening anyway. Trump probably greenlighted Turkish offensive so that he could more easily overcome reluctance to withdrawal among DC establishment

    Much of the ongoing analysis on NE Syria is confusing cause and effect imo. We're told Turkish offensive provoked 1) US withdrawal 2) return of regime to SDF-held areas. I beg to disagree.

    This (Turkish capture of parts of border + US remaining down south) would be bad news for Russia as it keeps it irrelevant re. whatever happens east of Euphrates

    Headlines, tweets notwithstanding, I've seen zero evidence US is genuinely trying to leave Syria, as opposed to redeploying in Syria. Trump may want to go—may also just be ranting while underlings hedge their bets & try to strap him down again. But if SDF breaks/flips, no choice.
