Trump administration officials are working overtime to say he never gave the green light to this disastrous gift to ISIS, Russia, and Iran. I don’t envy them. But it’s demonstrably false:

  3. US officials monitoring events in Syria feel terrible at what's happening to their allies the Kurds. A Kurdish official told me he understands US troops have to obey their orders to leave, and even now, appreciates the US troops who stood by the Kurds. It was very dignified.

  4. This is a shocking dynamic that history will not forget. The Kurds say they are facing ethnic cleansing by a NATO country, Turkey, as US forces nearby have NO ORDERS TO HELP, only orders to defend themselves and leave Northern Syria.

  5. The commander of Kurdish forces in Syria, Mazlum Kobane, told me the Kurds are facing a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” by Turkey and its radical militias. The Kurds estimate ¼ million people have already left border towns. UN says 160,000. Whatever the number, it’s growing fast.

Seems Trump administration didn't like that the Kurds made a deal with Assad, and now pushing for a peace deal with Turkey. But it was predictable. Kurds were getting killed. In war, always rapid developments and surprises, but this seems like winging it.

So story keeps developing. Administration wants to play peacemaker. Can't hurt. Could help a great deal, if it works. Timing critical. Facts on the ground changing quickly.

Of course the US should not be addicted to 'endless wars.' But to be clear, the Syria mission was not Iraq or Afghanistan (still ongoing). Very few US troops. Very few US casualties. Defeated ISIS state. Leaving chaos.

The borders of the Middle East are being redrawn. Turkey is grabbing a piece of Syria. The Kurds and Syrian army, now aligned, are fighting to hold on to what they can. As President Trump says whatever happens, happens, not America’s problem. What will happen is many will die.

President Trump is saying ‘let the people in the Middle East fight it out, we don’t care.’ What kind of message is that? They are fighting this land grab in Syria right now BECAUSE President Trump created a vacuum by ordering troops out without a plan, or even warning our allies.

Facing possible ethnic cleansing from Turkey and its extremist militias the Kurds have called on Syria’s President Assad to deploy to save them. It is the end of the autonomous zone the Kurds have called Rojava.

Turkey’s conflict in Syria took a major turn today. First alleged atrocities by Turkish-backed Arab militias, executing Kurds. US military officials tell me it's true, and they are DEEPLY concerned it opens the door to BOTH ethnic cleansing of Kurds and return of ISIS/Al-Qaeda
