    Just because Russia plays a good diplomatic game doesn’t mean it can project power in the way others in the region can - not ideologically, not militarily, not economically.

    It's not a post-American Middle East, particularly days after the Pentagon announced a fresh deployment to Saudi Arabia, but rather a Middle East in which no one pretends America's interests and policies are permanently aligned with any state or non-state actor

    Those costs are longstanding. profits politically from the current campaign; but the costs of his policies long term are immense and likely to leave Turkey poorer, more isolated, and more bitter in the years to come.

    European and US sanctions on Turkey are, thus far, small scale and unlikely to change Turkish policy. They do, however, represent a fundamental failure: didn't get into this spot by accident; a decade of brinksmanship and bad faith brought us here.

    Managing to screw the Kurds AND ruin relations with Turkey without getting US forces out of Syria would be a magnificent act of foreign policy incompetence.

    Dealing with and many members of Congress, including Democrats, about imposing powerful Sanctions on Turkey. Treasury is ready to go, additional legislation may be sought. There is great consensus on this. Turkey has asked that it not be done. Stay tuned!

    Reports about US forces leaving Manbij is a good sign for Assad and a bad sign for Ankara. Russia is standing fully behind Assad, can Turkey change that position? Meanwhile, US wants to protect Kobani. Taking Manbij will be the same lime encircling Kobani for Turkey.
