Description of my 2015 book on ISIS, which made an accidental and unfortunate blockbuster in Japan, caught in the middle of the political controversy surrounding the hostage crisis in Syria.

"Removing the modest contingent of US forces from Syria would create ideal conditions for the resurgence of ISIS and for Iran to quietly consolidate its “land bridge” to Lebanon and the Mediterranean." writes in his latest

  10. Nobody’s got clean hands here. The SDF ethnically cleansed some areas of Syrian Arabs; the Turks kill civilians; Assad is a mass murder; the Russians willfully bombed hospitals; and the US made promises it wouldn’t or couldn’t keep. This really isn’t a great neighborhood.

Here are some thoughts from me about the last tumultuous week in Syria.

  12. Finally there’s risk of ISIS resurgence following weekend events. Assad is responsible for over 90 percent of civilian deaths in Syria. His brutalization of country’s Sunni Arab majority helped germinate seeds of ISIS. Assad come back into eastern Syria risk triggering ISIS 2.0

  13. US & Turkey are net losers of weekend events. Although Turkey got rid off YPG for now, Assad will sweep it under carpet to use against Ankara on a rainy day as did his father the PKK in 1990s, while US loses credibility with both Turkey and Kurds, and Syria to Moscow and Tehran

The YPG and Assad regime have been co-belligerents in Syrian war. Rather than accept Turkish control, the YPG will fold under Damascus after US pullback. Of course, Assad won’t destroy the YPG. He will sweep it under the carpet to use it against Turkey one day, as did his father

  15. Russia is playing Syria like a chess board: Moscow gave Ankara green light to target YPG, a move that helped fold the group under Assad. Next Putin will ask Ankara to vacate Syria in return for Assad crushing the YPG. Moscow, Tehran, and Assad will consolidate power across Syria

  21. Turkey may use the destiny of Kurds as a bargaining chip in its negotiation with the Assad regime. In the long run, Turkish offensive may help Assad regime to reclaim larger part of its territory with Turkish collusion.
