        明治頃にたがが外れて乱獲が行われたそうで明治から大正の間の27年間に最低でも300頭前後が捕獲されるなど乱獲の記録があるそうで大正に入る頃には少数になり捕獲規制がされる程であった。20頭の大人のジュゴンがいたとしても年に1頭増えれば良い方であるそうだ。大正時代にはすでに絶滅が確定
