At the time of Turkish-Kurdish peace talks, even Turkish officials happily referred to the city as Kobani. The only reason to not do so is to dent the Kurdish character of the city.

This isn't, as with the cases of Sere Kaniye/ Ras al Ayn or similar town, a case of diglossia or two names for one city. The names are literally the actual name and the one applied by the state to reduce the Kurdish footprint in the North.

Oh btw, if you are unaware what someone thinks of the Kurdish people, observe if they write 'Kobani' or 'Ayn Al Arab'. The former is the name it has had since it was founded and the latter being an obviously political name given exogenously.

Though I really appreciate analysts and journalists telling Kurds they made a mistake. A great contribution no doubt.

As a child fleeing genocide myself with several relatives who died and a grandfather who was tortured until he was paraplegic, the upside is the survival of our people at the cost of our political freedom. The choice between Assadist repression and Turkey's mercs is easy.

Hard to believe the SAA-SDF agreement is valid at the moment without Russian acquiescence. If not, we are just seeing the Afrin scenario repeated where some SAA and NDF are sent in to be briefly bomber during a SANA newsreel to leave quietly as Turks move in.

Now that I think about it, it might be exactly what Erdogan would want. Think about all those Kurdish graves in Kobani's graveyard? Those can't continue to be there without bulldozing.

Let's see what this means in practice. Kobani's fall to Turkey's mercenaries would indeed be as bad as Halabja or Shingal in the eyes of the Kurdish nation. It resisted ISIS and it would be anguish to see Ahrar al Sharqiyah fulfill ISIS' mission.

While this is just for the cameras in an opportune time, this really is Russia's preferred scenario. Turkey's best leverage in Syria was its influence over the US. Now that that is gone, prepare for competitiveness to return to Syria diplomacy.

Imagine being so inept that you betray what chips you have in Syria, infuriate your own voting base (save for QAnon stragglers), infuriate your entire party and still find time to alienate the one NATO ally that would benefit from your withdrawal.

Oddly enough, with the way in which the Trump administration betrayed their Syrian partners, the Assad regime has regained a Kurdish population that is now probably going to feel as much animosity towards American political dealings in Syria as they do.

The only solution Assad can offer is total disbandment of SDF and full control over entire northeast Syria including Kurdish cities. The only positive outcome is that the genocide and ethnic cleansing can be prevented for now. Don't expect anything else.

The Black Shuhada flag isn't in itself a problem, although politicised by Jihadi groups it is a historic & religious flag that needs not be as frightening as people make it out to be. The criminal nature of Turkey's auxiliaries and their crimes against humanity is the problem.
