I don't tweet so often about Trump because I'm obsessed. Using his name is just the only way I can get him to keep reading my feed.

President Trump betrayed our partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces, and endangered our hard-won gains against ISIS. Our troops are left in the middle of a war with no plan other than retreat. He has failed as Commander-in-Chief to safeguard our country & protect our troops.

“The American military was unable to transfer about five dozen ‘high value’ ISIS detainees...[and, in the same area,] hundreds of Islamic State sympathizers escaped...Both developments underscored the pandemonium unleashed by Trump’s sudden decision”.

The Syria catastrophe is also a consequence of the colossal mistake of withdrawing from the Iran deal. All of the Administration’s focus has been on managing the Iran crisis they created, instead of working a political solution in northeast Syria (which was achievable).

Quote from end of NYT piece: As one former U.S. diplomat said to me recently, “The beacon has gone out.” We’re with the oligarchs now.

What's happening in Syria tonight above all represents a massive failure of US diplomacy. The US kept troops there to leverage US influence in peace negotiations to secure US goals. Now they're leaving in disarray & the opposite is happening - Iran & Russia are moving in.

Emphasizing the importance of a coherent, disciplined interagency process can sound wonky. But the absence of such a process on Syria led BOTH the Kurds & Turkey to have false expectations, making a crisis inevitable & much harder to manage 👇.

Trump doesn’t seem to know that Kirkuk is in Iraq, not Syria.

We’re witnessing the culmination of everything Trump: —marginalization of adults —hallowing out of professionals —absence of an interagency process —a corrupt POTUS who only thinks of himself —politics over nat’l interest —foreign policy by tweet; & —caving to foreign strongmen

First Trump politicized support to Ukraine even as its fragile democracy faces Russian aggression. Now Trump has betrayed our Kurdish allies in Syria, leaving them no option other than turning to Moscow. Needless to say, Putin is thrilled.

Republicans were ruthless in criticizing Obama’s withdrawal from Iraq & for not striking Syria in 2013 (even though most Republicans wouldn’t authorize). But Obama never retreated under fire. What Trump is doing is exponentially worse for US credibility.
