  8. Ok, not finally. Russia has it in its interest right now to promise the moon to the SDF—just to fuck over the Americans and get good press as defenders of the Kurds. The SDF is naturally hopeful of forestalling Turkey’s invasion and will jump at any proposed commitment.

  10. Second, the fact that they are being redeployed southward suggests more US military presence in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, at least for the time being. The SDF in these areas are still working alongside Americans. Rules of engagement still apply: attacks by hostile forces are repelled

  11. A lot of the reporting so far focuses on a deal having been reached but not the details. Qamishli and Hasaka areas, where the regime had residual military presences and where Turkey isn’t invading, only bombing, may be easier to cede back to Damascus.
