https://archive.today/qD3yI ================================ Listen up, shit is about to get real. You already know that Common Core is bringing about big changes to education.
Well, under CC there is a massive push to get 'educational' games (read: electronic INDOCTRINATION) in schools.
Once vidya is normalized as a form of education, control over the educational message will have reached ultimate consolidation. Think about it, radical left-wing propaganda games being forced upon students who are graded on their game performance (aka compliance).
DiGRA and others are also involved in the field of "persuasive games" which are a major component of common core. People involved with gamification in Common Core have been writing about redefining "gamers" since long before GG.
There has been a big effort to get games accepted as art and education over the past 15 years. Do you think the 'Gamers are Dead' movement game out of nowhere?
Edge Magazine was pushing this agenda pretty early. It comes from the very top though, and is being enacted by culture creators.
Now I realize the truth and see that the west is in decline, this being a prime example of it. this teaching program teaches kids to adhere to their feelings, which is a grand step down from rational assessment.
We're at full-blown, 100% cultural subversion, ladies and gents. They've spent billions on this, changed nearly every textbook company to be compliant, and built the biggest data center in the US for it. Get used to the SJWs; it's going to be a bumpy ride for the future.
================================ - Get everyone to play videogames. Lower their belief that games are challenging, fun, enjoyable. Make them mundane, like TV, and oust dissenters and competitive players.
-Introduce games into education. Then illiterates and ignorants will be taught with games. Games will be tailored to teach what those in power want, as they are not like books; games are designed by those with money or sponsors.
-Games are now more useful as a tool for influencing and programming than they are as games or entertainment.

A thought that comes to mind is how boomers went through public school and then payed off their college debt in a summer or 2. ( all the while getting a solid education but buttfuck reasoning/reflective skills but that's beside the point) Then it became commonplace you go through public school and if your parents hadnt saved up you had to get indebted for like a decade to get the degree College became defacto mandatory Now with common core it seems like 10 years down the line there'll be such a gap between the average high school diplo and college entry, parents will be forced to send their kids to private school from primary school on lest they want them to fall back thus not only raking in the fees for 9 or so years of private schooling +! College fees ( constantly rising) but also the taxes on public education Tl;dr you clappers are getting so fucked over by your system

I think better things are those typing games.
Something that I think would be pretty cool is in science classes if they had stuff like KSP to learn about rocket science. Maybe put it in history to be all, showing how hard space flight is when you have to do stuff from scratch.
But I think it's pretty dumb to make a field and then go 'now make a game, for this!' instead of going "Look at this game, it would be a great way to teach THIS."
Also maths is hard

Fucking hell I'm almost 22 how long has this been going on?
Kiwifag by the way. We have our own kind of common core called NCEA which was always laughed at for being complete shit. The way they did the marking was retarded too.
Grades were divided up into (from lowest to highest) achieved, merit, excellence instead of using percentages. What everyone assumed it meant was 50-75% was achieved, 75-90% was merit and 90%+ was excellence. Though what it actually was had the questions in the test themselves give points towards each grade. The easy questions (describe) gave points towards achieved, moderate (explain) to merit and hard (discuss) to excellence. Though because if you didn't get enough of the lower grade questions right you couldn't get the higher grades, if you messed up more than half of the shitty one-word answer questions, regardless of how well thought out the rest of the answers were, they wouldn't mean shit.
In one particularly hard chemistry test I had completely ignored the easy questions to focus on the harder, longer questions. My logic was that I knew (because I was a slow writer) I wouldn't have enough time to finish all the questions so I'd just do all of the hard ones (which I thought were worth more points). When I received my paper back the teacher had marked me really highly on all the merit and excellence questions but I didn't finish enough of the achieved questions to get the achieved grade so I failed.
Needless to say I was fucking pissed. Still am today actually but that's mainly because the vice principle said "hurr, just answer da ez questins first!" instead of saying "well shit, maybe we should consider ALL of the work you do instead of just the easy questions." The actual principle wanted to get rid of NCEA but he was labelled as an elitist (how that's an insult I will never know) because he was expelling kids who weren't performing well so the school's average grade went up.
Actually now that I think about it, NZ gets a lot of the new age policies before every other country. Maybe we should be looking at NZ as well as Sweden.

>>807254 Another hypnofag here, just confirming from my own experiences that it's a slow process depending on what you're trying to do with it.
If you're trying to get a fatshit to eat some cake, you'll do it within half an hour.
Trying to get that same fatshit to take up exercising could take over 2 weeks of regular sessions, and thats with him being an active participant.
Hypnosis only works when you're comfortable with it and all the different tools like music, smells, fancy words, colourful patterns or something to plant your focus on are just there to help get you into the right frame of mind.
Once you're in that frame of mind, you become a lot more open to ideas, not enough for something drastic, but enough to take an idea to heart that you would probably otherwise think about for a few minutes.
And then that's built on slowly over the course of fuck knows how many sessions until you are saying or doing things that the "you" from before this started wouldn't dream of it.
A lobster boiling in a pot is a decent analogy here.

-Subliminal messaging is being used in computerized tests, waves of colours, and audio noise masking the underlying message
-teachers and parents are prohibited from viewing the test
-the degree of hypnotic messaging is non-existant in the English section which is used for blatant propaganda to begin with, it increases for science then is full blown for math. It may simply be that level of programming, English propaganda is good and math makes us feel sick; and have a level of deniability about having actual subliminal words flashing on screen and being repeated in headphones.
-it's likely this is a pilot program and only selected
dissidents students are given this version to test feasibility for regular television/games media
I have not watched television in about 14 years and I still have a crt monitor that age. I don't have a phone or other screened device. As bad as making the entire future generations drooling morons (which already happened), this is much more terrifying.

To a person who knows test-taking theory, these are freebies. The problem is that it ironically questions why people like games via peer pressure, which may haunt a kid long after a test. And that's assuming a teacher has a proper gradesheet with correct answers - if she decides to make her own, she could push any agenda she wants because of "muh subjectivity", the calling card of common core.
tl;dr Your opinion is whatever the teacher wants it to be, which combining this with feminism, are going to destroy any kid who can't be entertained by real life. It's going to destroy the gifted introverts who can't stand their real life, and possibly push these kids to suicide because these fucks tell them everything they believe is wrong, yet doing nothing but handing drugs to subside these feelings of disgust. Good lord … you people sound like a bunch of old fogies complaining about "the new math". My kids have had to learn this crap and, so, they learned it. However, unlike a lot of people, I don't rely solely on the public school system to educate my children. You shouldn't either. If they learn this and do what the teacher wants them to do, they'll get excellent grades and graduate with high honors and that comes with a free ticket to college. In the meantime, as a parent, I teach them whatever the school won't while reminding them that the public school will want them to "tow the line" and that they should. They do what's expected in high school, continue that mindset in college, then they can shine in post graduate school and be fully prepared for life. Life, kiddos, sometimes comes with sucking it up and doing what the boss tells you to do, even if you think it's wrong. You can do it and pay your rent, or you can stand strong on your principles and starve.

They're trying to transfer maths mentality over to the right brain (left side) since the frontal lobe, the center of critical thinking and conscoiusness, is less connected to the left brain (right side) which tends to be more focused on measurements and numbers and structure rather than the right brain (left side) which is more creative.
If you haven't noticed, liberals, especially extreme liberals like in tumblr SJW circles are more right brained (left sided) and as has been shown by SJW movement takeovers of Occupy and now 4chan, are obviously more useful idiots.

This type of curriculum was being pushed big time throughout Canada. I respected the intent but completely hated how it was written in the curriculum and graded, especially math. Highlights: -I had a number of kids who could not even subtract (I taught grade 7). -Forget classroom discipline, you don't do the work, sure we will rubber stamp you through. Creates great atmospheres (bullying etc.) Couldn't do shit. Can't toss them out. Against their rights. -Reading levels two to four grade levels lower then where they should be (highest one was grade six…I taught grade 8) -Science was an after thought. District focus reading and math. Kids would get pulled out of science, health and history/ social regularly to do catch up work -Grading rubrics 1-4 (1 being excelling or some crap like that, 1 not.meeting expectations – IS STILL A PASSING GRADE) -Provincial University lost their mind when asking for transcripts. There is also a company that has created biometric readers that the student wears (blood pressure, heart rate, etc).
A test subject is most suggestible to subliminal programming when they are calm and relaxed. Should a student show signs of stress while taking the test, an algorithm could be utilized to change the imagery on the screen that best supports seeding or reinforcement of ideas in the test subject. If a subject's thoughts are busy solving a problem (eg a math spacial awareness problem) any subliminal input sent to the subject would make the subject know that something was "off" yet they would not be able to place their finger on it.
IIRC the guys from Google were invited to one of the Bilderburg Meetings. They know how to write personality algorithms.
Couple this with a computer based test that cannot be talked about and you have real issues of student psyche manipulation.
Common Core (in regards to mathematics) slows the problem solving process (for most individuals) by increasing the number of steps it take to solve the question. This slowing down of result attainment would be therefore represented by having a lower test score. Lower test scores mean fewer university acceptances Essentially, they are creating a poorly uneducated (drone) workforce that would be willing to believe anything the "Educated" leaders tell them. After all, the test results from private school (non-CC) students would have higher test grades, not because they would be deemed as "more intelligent" as they would claim but because the students would not have been held back by a less efficient problem solving method.

Britfag here that just learned about common core today thanks to pol. If common core is so hated by students, teachers and no state or anything wanted or voted for it, then why are they not refusing to teach the curriculum? If the answer is that they are scared of losing their jobs or getting fined doing it, I can kind of understand the fear. But it would be more than just selling out your beliefs like a lot of people do. If they are aware of the dangers of common core, then they are aware that they are not only selling out their own beliefs, but the futures of the children and, on a larger scale, society in general.

Teacher here, and I'm in favor of common core. The shit you're posting is curriculum, not the core standards. Some of it has good reasons and I was writing out responses to the ones to which that applies, but I lost the post so fuck it. Common core for elementary math doesn't stipulate any of those methods by the way, only that multiple methods be covered, and several of those are actually useful ways to consider the subject.

It's a really useful trick for kids who can't add by rote yet, or even adults adding numbers with more significant digits.
All that's happening is instead of looking up 7+7 on a table, the way you and I did it, they tell the child to count up to the next 10, then add what's left. So instead of
>7+7=14you can go
>10-7=3, so 7+3=10, and 7-3=4, so 7+7 = 7+3+4 it's overcomplicated for just 7+7 but breaking up numbers into more manageable chunks is useful a f for mental math, and is basically the whole point of algebra so why not get kids started on that dynamic early?

>>822727 It isn't. For a simple addition problem like 6+7 it's way easier to make 13 as a one step problem instead of a two step problem. Of course like you mentioned it is more useful for larger and more complex problems. I've noticed that math is generally taught as some difficult concepts really easy so you're prepared when you get a hard question down the road.
>>822820 >>822823 I think the main problem with Common Core from the math part is that it is forcing students to learn a specific method of learning. Contrary to what Common Core thinks, math methods are not a one size fits all method and not everyone will like a certain method compared to another method. This is what is causing parents and people to look at these problems odd is because they've never used those methods to find math. For me the adding to 10 is something I've already done and comes naturally while I have no clue about the number grid.

>>819358 For all its faults the movie's central thesis isn't exactly wrong.
The issue of the Western dysgenic trends in intelligence isn't widely talked about (since it's somewhat incorrect), but it is being discussed and studied by scientists.
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160289607000463 >>[I]n Britain a decline in IQ among 11–12 year olds of 12 IQ points over the years 1975–2003, representing a decline of 4.3 IQ points a decade, has been reported by Shayer (2007). The evidence of these four studies suggests that the Flynn Effect has ceased in the economically developed nations. There is, however, a problem with these four studies that these countries have significant numbers of non-European immigrants whose mean IQs are lower than the indigenous populations and these will reduce the mean IQs of recent samples. The contribution of this to the "negative Flynn Effect" needs to be quantified. >Nevertheless, it seems probable that in the economically developed nations the phenotypic intelligence will first stabilize, as it apparently has in Norway and Australia, and then decline, as it apparently has in Denmark and Britain. In the economically developing nations phenotypic intelligence will likely increase for some years if environmental conditions improve. This will reduce the intelligence gap between the economically developed and the economically developing nations, but it must be expected that in due course the impact of environmental improvements in the economically developing nations will cease. When this happens, and if dysgenic fertility continues, it can be predicted that both genotypic and phenotypic intelligence will decline throughout the world. >The decline of the world's intelligence and the prospect of a continuation of this decline must surely be a cause for concern. Intelligence is an important determinant of scientific and cultural achievement, earnings, health and many aspects of the quality of life. All of these are likely to deteriorate as the world's intelligence declines. >We should consider whether there are any plausible alternative scenarios to the projected decline of the world's intelligence. The problem lies in the presence of dysgenic fertility worldwide and in whether this could be reversed or is likely to reverse itself spontaneously. The problem of arresting and if possible reversing dysgenic fertility within countries was extensively discussed by eugenicists in the first half of the twentieth century. Accounts of these ideas have been given by Kevles (1985) and Lynn (1996, 2001). >The eugenicists considered a twofold strategy to deal with the problem, which they designated positive and negative eugenics. Positive eugenics consisted of policies designed to persuade the more intelligent to have greater numbers of children. The principal method proposed was the provision of financial incentives, as advocated by Cattell (1937), but it proved impossible in the western democracies to introduce any practical measures of this kind. Negative eugenics consisted of the dissemination of knowledge of birth control and the sterilisation of the mentally retarded, which was first introduced in Indiana in 1907 and subsequently in most of the American states and throughout most of Europe. These programs had some success but did not arrest dysgenic fertility (Lynn & van Court, 2004). >In the second half of the twentieth century, public opinion turned against eugenics and from the 1960s onwards eugenics became virtually universally condemned. Throughout western nations the eugenics societies for the promotion of eugenics dissolved themselves. It seems unlikely that any attempts to introduce eugenic programs in the western democracies will be made in the foreseeable future. The lesson to be drawn from the history of the eugenics movement is that it would be immensely difficult and probably impossible to halt or reverse dysgenic fertility by the methods of classical eugenics. The eugenicists tried to find ways of reversing dysgenic fertility in individual countries and failed. It would be even more difficult to reverse dysgenic fertility in the whole world. To achieve this ways would have to be found to increase fertility in the high IQ nations and reduce fertility in the low IQ nations. >>822637 >>822689 I didn't say vidja itself is indoctrinating, I said the recent push to conglamorate and control the production of vidja is.
I too used to be a /v/irgin and play vidja every day (not every single hour though)
I'm lucky to have been raised on Age of Empires, Caesar 3, Deus Ex, Jedi Knight and Half-Life where I learned about history, learned how to run societies properly without them collapsing (albeit simplistically) and always played games where statist empire = bad, resistance to said statist empire = good. Turns out, that's a pretty good lesson to teach your children, unless of course you want it to turn out like 1984.
That said, the elite are now trying to co-opt and use this medium to brainwash people into accepting what ever they want to shove down people's throats, and actually have been doing said thing since roughly 2008 with the collapse of anything decent in vidja (like Spore RIP in peace) and the production of CoD: Modern Warfare where military propaganda is often used (and now it's even infected Battlefield) with anti-anonymous and now anti-militia messages shoved in (brought to you by the writer of The Dark Knight Rises!)
The saddest thing is, the fat consumerist neo-cons, the biggest voter block for some reason in the more conservative states because libertarians seem to be giving up on voting, are the ones who were snagged first, at least since then, and the liberal left had been harder to tame until OWS was co-opted by SJWs, well, at least the civil rights liberal left. The Feminist/progressive liberal left has either been tamed or too busy snorting coke and hailing satan to care about this since the 80s.

Contrary to what Common Core thinks, math methods are not a one size fits all method and not everyone will like a certain method compared to another method. This is what is causing parents and people to look at these problems odd is because they've never used those methods to find math. Either you're trying to say these materials don't meet the standards, or that they do and, because of that, they're actually good. I will disagree if you think that way, and ask you to present why you think these methods suffice or are better than any traditional or older ones.
>>822929 Because if the kids want to reach that conclusion, that a number can be broken down into sums or subtractions of others, then they can reach it themselves. I don't want my child taught that you must add 7+7 into 7+3+4 then to make 10+4 then reach 14.
I'll explain why: how does a kid know 7 = 3+4? Probably, this kid had to count, from 7, to reach the conclusion he needs 3 whateveres more, fingers, for instance. Three more. Then, counting from his 3 fingers, then reached 7 and found himself needing 4. Hooray, he broke down 7 into 3 and 4 to fit into 10+4.
Couldn't he have, from seven, counted more seven fingers, and reached 14 *faster* than he took to find all of that out?
Because, in the end, you'll memorize 7+7=14. That 3+9=12. That 2+3=5. Because you just will. Basic operations like these are meant to be memorized, because you, at the very least, need them on a day to day basis.

>>823000 >Dysgenic fertility means that there is a negative correlation between intelligence and number of children. Its presence during the last century has been demonstrated in several countries. We show here that there is dysgenic fertility in the world population quantified by a correlation of − 0.73 between IQ and fertility across nations. It is estimated that the effect of this has been a decline in the world's genotypic IQ of 0.86 IQ points for the years 1950–2000. A further decline of 1.28 IQ points in the world's genotypic IQ is projected for the years 2000–2050. In the period 1950–2000 this decline has been compensated for by a rise in phenotypic intelligence known as the Flynn Effect, but recent studies in four economically developed countries have found that this has now ceased or gone into reverse. It seems probable that this “negative Flynn Effect” will spread to economically developing countries and the whole world will move into a period of declining genotypic and phenotypic intelligence. I am against the Common Core ways that have been flying around the net that you get a wrong answer for not using the method the teacher, book, or whatever it is, chose to use. If it isn't really like that or the implementations will change, all the better. Until then, I'll criticize what I've seen.

The idea is that everyone writes their shit down, then you have a group chat about it. There's generally no "wrong" opinions, save for total edgelord shit like "the woman is at fault cuz shes not sucking my dick!!" or whatever. The point of the exercise is to hear other people's opinions, consider them, and rebut them civilly. There's also having to back your shit up when you say it.
Also, typically, you can say that someone is at no fault, and part of the fun is in seeing what assumptions get made. For example, did the assassin kill the woman at the husband's behest, or was he just there? Did the woman do something to attract the ire of whoever hired this assassin? Is the husband guilty for not harboring the woman and keeping her safe? etc etc
Considering how little there is to learn in grade school, I wouldn't mind a day being taken out for a little thought exercise.

And what kid has 14 fingers to count on? The whole point of breaking apart numbers like that is that human capacity for fast addition/subtraction stops at around a dozen. It gets even worse if you have more significant digits. A child is learning this dynamic on such small numbers because it's easy and demonstrates what's going on. I'm a third year math major looking to teach in Texas. Our first chapter of fundamentals of math for elementary teachers is all about common core and how it helps. Texas may say they don't have common core, but I spent two semesters learning how to teach it. And it is a very do it this way or it is wrong subject. You can't simply multiply two numbers, you have to write it all out like 22 X 33 is 3 times 2, 3 times 30. Then 20 times 3 and 20 times 30. Then add. About 5 more steps than necessary. Don't do it all? Wrong.

There are tons of people running around with reverse-autism. They can't figure out math, they don't know how to solve a puzzle, and they have terrible spacial memories and awareness. They don't seem to believe in any sort of objective reality. But they're good at reading body language and trying to ingratiate themselves to others, and they think in entirely subjective way. Is there a name for this disorder?

Who decides what the standards are?
The authorities and CC shills can make any claim they wish. It doesn't mean that the claims are true.
You are claiming that the teachers are not (or would not) be discouraged from teaching any other problem solving method other than those endorsed by CC. The thing that will determine an accurate representation of how a student is going to be educated and by what standards is by the standards that the teachers themselves will have to grade students by. This so far has not been encouraging by reports make.
I do not "know" if CC is for the betterment of joos or any other group of people. That said it is for the betterment of companies that have financed as well as the students that are not taught only common core.

>>797630 I don't know how to explain it but I see what they're trying to do.
They're trying to get you to split 6 in half (two 3s), add one of the threes to seven, get ten (an easy number to work with in a base ten system) and then add the second three to ten and get thirteen.
It's still fucking retarded and over complicating an extremely easy problem.
The smart kids will figure this out, but won't ever need it and just get slowed down because they'll have to "show their work" and do it "as it was shown in class" (implying the kids good at math even need to pay attention in class and don't just figure it out own their own.) It's basically going to turn the smart kids into drones.
The kids in the middle will just be confused by this and the potential they have will be stunted.
The exceptionally stupid kids (mostly niggers and spics), which this is aimed at, still won't get it, but all of the other kids, even the smart ones, will be just as slowed down.
This ultimately helps no one. It holds the good kids back and doesn't do anything for the dumb kids.
I will admit I'm a young fag, High School freshman in Burgerstan, but thankfully I never had to do anything like this is elementary school. However, as stated above, we still have to "show our work" and do all of the drone-like shit shown by the teacher in class.
I almost always get the right answers, but the area where I lose the most points on tests however is showing my work. They want you to write out every little fucking mundane detail of the simplest fucking problems.
I can work out everything in my head and use the calculator for the things that can't be done in one's head, and I don't need to write down "my work". But you lose points if you don't.
It's all just to turn kids into drones. They aren't teaching them to think, they're teaching them to shut their mouths, don't question the authority figure in the room and do what they are told, exactly how they are told to do it.
Also, in the math department, they give out bullshit homework. It has absolutely no substance or value, it's just busy work. So much busy work that I haven't had a teacher since 4th grade who has actually checked the homework for correction. There's simply too much to do. This further adds to the problem, teachers don't know what the kids do know and do not know before the tests.
The public education system is in dire need of major reform. When I'm an older fag and have children they're going to private schools, I refuse to put them through (it will probably be worse then than it is now) what I'm going through now.

>Prove to me that teachers are being discouraged from using their own curriculum.CC is being driven by policymakers in D.C. CC is set up in such a way that it can hardly be called voluntary. The Obama administration's grant program offers "Race to the Top" federal educational grants – which come from stimulus funds - to states if their school systems adopt preferred Obama policies like CC. States that adopt CC receive higher "scoring" from the Obama administration in their grant applications. As a result of this coercion, only Nebraska, Alaska, Texas, Virginia and Minnesota have not adopted CC. Minnesota adopted the language arts standards but kept its own math standards.
TL;DR Funding is being used as a blackmailing tool to enforce teachers to educate students using CC.
>Just because you have standards does not mean there is only one way to achieve them.I recognize that there is more than one way to solve a problem. Students need tools that can provide them a way to solve problems. Some students solve different problems according to the tools that are capable of, and are aware of, using. In order for students to solve problems in a manner that is as expedient as possible, the tools provided by CC are more cumbersome which relates to the time that it takes for the problem to be solved. One of the ways to solve mathematical problems before CC, was to "simplify" the equation. Another way of solving a problem is to add 795058 to both sides of an equation, just because you can do it, doesn't mean that you should.

>So much busy work that I haven't had a teacher since 4th grade who has actually checked the homework for correction. There's simply too much to do. This further adds to the problem, teachers don't know what the kids do know and do not know before the tests.I hate grading. Its time consuming and a waste of time now. There are computer systems that already exist (mymathlab) that could easily administer and grade homework instantly and give exceptional feedback to teachers allowing us to focus on knowing what the students know.
The problem is funding. Not every student has internet access or a machine that can handle it. My work computer is a 9 year old Dell that I have to restart 5 times a day because it goes so slow. This is also what we have in the computer labs. If we did get some massive amount of money the administration would probably spend it on the crappiest machines that the apathetic students would break instantly.
Sorry for the rant… education sucks.

Number line is probably what they'd make them use here. Or you'd do blocks. A single is a dot, a line/or box of 10 up is a long, a box of 100 is a flat, and a 3 dimensional box is simple just a box.
So, you'd set up a problem with 100s and 10s and 1s. Draw 1–100, 5–10s, and 3–1s. Then circle, remove, and rewrite. Ok, so this sounds like no big deal, until you realize they are doing this in the 5th grade.

153-40 = 113
113-112 = 1
40+112=152
153-152=1
Or you can go further if the child has specific problems;
100-100 = 0
50-10-40 = 0
3-2-0 = 1
153-112-40 = 1 QED
The problem with common core isn't how they teach, it's that schools are being forced into it.
The real problem is the Jewish Bolshevik ideas of Lev Vygotsky. Social Constructivism is the primary manner through which all education is given in mandatory schooling.

>>842962 >>843012 The biggest problem is that teaching strategies like this eventually forms a crutch for average students.
Under older methods of instructions, average students would still end up being very good at quick number facts, including their multiplication tables.
The average 14 year old in schools right now does not know their multiplication tables. They can work out the answer, but they do not have "instant recall".
"Instant recall" has been portrayed as bad by the left wing educators because you 'either know it or you don't'. Apparently you can't work it out, if you don't know it straight away (which is wrong, but anyway).
The result being that children today are very slow at computation, compared to even a generation ago.

I was doing student teaching with a 5th grade math teacher once a week for a semester. The things that went on in that class I swear I recall doing in my 2nd and 3rd grade classes.
A boy spoke up once, said, "Miss, can I do the box method (long division or what they call the "final algorithm"). She said "no, you have to do it this way. If you'd like to check your work after with it, that's fine." (This was also her saying that because she felt it was stupid to force the kid - she hated common core).

This will slow the student's learning to a crawl due to the limitations that come from inhibited learning.
By using CC methods, the time it will take to complete a mathematics exam will be greater, yet the time allowed to complete it will still remain the same. Therefore creating a false impression that the students have the signs of learning disability without actually having it.
IIRC there was an article stating that in 20 years 50% of the population will have autism. Perhaps the grades will show that to be the case but only because the students are being held back by sub-par teaching methods.

At the end of the day, there will be teachers who still teach other methods, but the force is on them, not children.
Common Core methods are faster and easier in some cases, but like Vedic mathematics this is not universal.
123 x 123 is really easy with vedic mathematics. But it's absolute bullshit when multiplying 999x999.

It affects all aspects of the curriculum. Do you remember learning Critical Theory in English? By for example, reading for gender conventions in old English texts? That is Marxism.
I don't think much will change. Men will continue to fall behind because teaching is no longer structured enough for young males.

>>843695 Every study into the subject shows that performance increases as difference between genders and how they are taught increases. It's generally accepted boys and girls learn in different ways.
It's largely illegal (by which I should probably say """"unethical"""") to segregate people based on gender in a school that has both boys and girls. The accepted model, promoted model and Government subsidised model is "inclusive education".
This means including everyone - whether they are dumb, smart, white, black, male or female - in the same classroom. With the exception of upper high school, where streaming is accepted.
The arguments are that in spite of better performance, inclusive schools "socialise" students better and perform better under "wholistic" measurements. I.e. things that can't be disproved.
The comprimise is already made. They're teaching more towards how women learn: less structure, more words. And I don't mean word problems, I mean getting people to explain how they feel about a particular subject, and using words to explain how they got there.
i.e. promoting left-right brain patterns (demonstrably better in women), rather than forward-back brain patterns (demonstrably better in men).

As I was reading into issues surrounding the common core curriculum, I asked a question that shocked me. Why do we take offense to common core? It seems like a good fraction of /pol/acks sympathize with the Nazi movement, or fascism in general. We do this because we view fascism as an efficient form of government. Fascism realizes the necessity of hierarchy, the stratification of classes, the segregation of minorities. Here on /pol/, we fight cultural marxism, we seek stratification among classes, we want to be part of a better functioning society. What we fail to realize is that the society we want already exists! We are the unlucky few who are slotted to remain in the bluepilled class, yet educated enough to become redpilled and realize the shithole that we're stuck in! Common core is simply a way for the government to eliminate people like us. The lower class should remain bluepilled, the upper class should remain redpilled. It is when the lower class becomes redpilled that revolution may occur and the upper class may lose power. Therefore, the upper class creates common core to prevent the bluepilled class from learning the truth. Here in /pol/, we find ourselves in a sort of existential angst. We want to change our position in society; we want to be the ones holding the power to use the bluepilled as we see fit. But we don't know how. We take this frustration out by proposing ideas like "the jew did it," "muh stormfag," the "pacific northwest movement," etc. All of these ideas work to displace our longing for power, but does nothing to progress our cause. What are we left with? Should we continue to fantasize about /pol/ one day uniting and taking power for ourselves, or should we accept our bluepilled destiny and embrace the common core mentality?

It means people with severe disabilities are put in regular classrooms with an 'assistant', instead of a specialist who specifically knows how to teach them to the best of their ability.
And it means that people at either end of the intelligence spectrum (which more often includes men than women) are left with a disadvantage.
Anonymous 01/05/15 (Mon) 08:59:55 16dbb8 No. 843952
>>843878 Tabula Rasa is majorly floored when it comes to education. I remember typing a friend's thesis for her. She specialized in educating children with Learning Difficulties (LD). What I recall most from the findings is (despite what I would consider a small sample set) the students with LD underperformed in what appears to be in a lineal fashion (ie the total percentages of the grades were virtually identical between the first test analysis and the last).
By having students with LD (regardless of assistants) in with the rest of the "normal" students, the LD students will inadvertently impede the learning rate due to the lowest performing student requiring more attention from the teacher.

However, what bothers me is that videogames are seen as some sort of necessity now. Shit, if I had kids (which I don't think I will, but I'm never writing that off) I won't fucking raise them on videogames. There are way too many ways of educating children that are not stupid things like CoD or Minecraft. I consider myself to have been dumbed down by this shit and I'm not dumbing down my kids. This is going to be entertainment for them, but make them read a motherfucking good book once in a while, because thanks to this idea that videogames are an amazing thing I have wasted my time and I don't know half of what I need to. It is my choice now to learn all of what I believe it's interesting or I need to know, but I feel it'd be much better if I had it a decade ago.

Saw an old teacher of mine, he was newish when I graduated, moving up the ladder. As I left, he became a sort of director within the school, a position I don't really understand, but him and a few others were second to the principle. He's only 4-5 years older than me, so I really feel I can relate to him; What I saw was a ruined man. A man who loved to teach when I saw him last, a span of 4 years, looked closer to a hobo then a man who wanted to give his life to education. Common core was the first thing through my head, but I didn't get the chance to ask him about it. If I see him again, /pol/ will get the interview.

In this sense, whole language is regarded as "touchy-feely", dependent on context and feelings rather than definite pronunciations and meanings, and therefore part of a broader promotion of concepts such as moral relativism or that language, science, and mathematics are social constructs. Frankly the way they describe how to do some of these problems aren't even hard at all, It's only hard for those who the mental capacity of a retard. But anyway, I guess churning out the same methods that don't encourage thinking is still somehow better. Math, believe it or not, makes less intuitive common sense the more advanced you get. It's the reason why so many retarded ass college students struggle with basic shit like babby tier calculus because >muh intuitive common sense is lost. These are students that are supposed to have more than sufficient mathematical knowledge and critical thinking skills to learn babby tier "higher" math. Calculus is not hard at all, whatsoever.

>>860761 This pic is disingenuous as fuck but not for the reason stated in pic. The uncorrupted principle is sound: considering a number as (round number minus small number) can make mental arithmetic easier. Pic counterexample would be 100*96 = 100*(100 - 4) = 100*100 - 100*4 = 10000 - 400 = 9600.
But anyway the pic method DOES work: 100 = 100 - 0 and 96 = 100 - 4 so the first two digits should be 100 - 0 - 4 = "96" and the last two digits should be 0 * 4 = "00" for 9600 as expected. The trick is a cheap imitation of what I described above in this way: (100 - a)*(100 - b) = 1000 - 100*(a + b) + a*b. This is true for all a and b but simply writing the digits together like that won't work when a*b > 99.

School is about teaching you how to receive information from other sources and how to make your information simple and straight-forward to parse. Showing your work is an easy way to show that you know how to get the answer. Now, for many people, that is a waste of time. That does not matter. You can't just say I know the answer and expect people to say, oh, well, sure, you seem to know what you are talking about, you don't have to show your work. That would be stupid. Same reason you need sources, to back yourself up. showing your work, being thorough, methodical and precise prevents laziness and arrogance. Keep your mouth shut if you can't prove what you are going to say with cold hard fact.
Tedium strengthens you. Everyone else had to show their work, what makes you so special, you irreverent child? Pay your fucking dues, you need to fucking check your own shit to prevent mistakes and write it out clearly and concisely to let everyone know you know your shit. >>836273 Economyfag here anon, hope I'm not too late. Part of the reason they can get away with this is the fact that even though we have tons of debt, we've never actually defaulted on it. The majority of our debt comes from American citizens in the form of of private investment in the govt (treasury bills, etc) and it always gets paid back because the budget always passes (which is why shit like a government shutdown before passing the budget is so dangerous).
We do owe a lot of money, but as long as the budget deficit remains low (aka we repay most of what's due on time) or better yet have a surplus (tax revenue > payments due), investor confidence will remain high and people will continue to buy US bonds.
There are people who believe these numbers are made up to save face in front of the international community and prevent the collapse of the dollar, but there's two obvious issues with this idea:
1- The numbers are shit; The deficit is fucking huge (though it's gotten way better since it tanked in 2008) and debt is literally the highest in human history. If they wanted to look good, they would.
2- No intelligence agency in the world has a reason to believe US is cheating. As soon as ANYTHING came out from the KGB or China or whothefuckever, international investment would cease in a fucking instant.

Just so people get it They are teaching kids to "break up" numbers in order to quickly add a series of numbers together. In theory this works, the problem is you are asking kids to subtract numbers (breaking up) when you are still trying to teach them to add. If a kid has to "make a ten" when addingd 7 + 8, essentially subtracting 2 from 7 to make 5, to add to 8 to make ten… Then adding the remaining 5 to the ten… That kid ain't going to make it. We all find ways of doing math that work best for us, but I was never taught nor ended up "breaking up" numbers except the ones that were already easily breakable. Adding 15 to 15 would be adding 15 + 10 + 5, since it's quicker to do in your head than counting up 15. There is nothing wrong with counting. Fuck, I still do it. The problem is these idiots are trying to make kids think about these problems with more developed methods, while those methods are not the most efficient. I feel sorry for any kid going through this shit. I don't like multiplication tables personally (raw memorization) but I learned quick strategies for getting numbers. Anything larger I could simply write down or, well shit, just use a calculator or a phone. We live in a society where everything is quicker and accessible. We ALWAYS have a phone, and if we don't, worse case scenario we can get a post it note and stack the equation. Now they expect our kids to learn these fucked strategies where they will spend minutes on questions - in an era where you can go into your pocket, pull your phone out, and get an answer instantly. It's fucking loony tunes. When the world is getting faster why are we forcing our kids to take even slower methods?

Why are you using pictures of problems and curriculum as arguments against CC when all CC is is a set of standards? The CC standards don't advise or require certain courses or problems. They do lower the bar in some areas, such as pushing algebra to HS, and I recognize their other issues like indoctrination. I just don't get why you guys are so hung up on something that isn't even affected by the CC standards themselves.

Math discussion is still burying the real issue of indoctrination and ACTUAL brainwashing. People are going to be retarded in math regardless. Dependence on calculators is inevitable at this point since the teaching generation can't do math either. Having everything a child reads in class be about how great the government is compared to their family, muslims have stronger beliefs than christians, anal sex and blowjobs are proper birth control, etc etc. is THE issue. Obviously nobody reads the thread and it should be remade with relevant links.

Why not do something more convoluted than turning 88+8 into 90+6?
go ahead and do a full addition operation when incremental memory seems so much faster in humans when looking up a list of associations is much easier than manually finding and verifying a proper relationship.
its pretty much like
looking up a triple map vs
for n1+n2
while(n1%10&&n2%10)
++n1;
–n2;
vs.
number['7']['plus'](7)
where plus function is another while loop that does the same thing but more convoluted
r=0
while(r+n1<10)
++r
–n2
r+n1+n2
vs
number['7']['plus'][7]

Hey /pol/, I'm a high school senior (18, I promise) who was randomly selected to take something called the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP ) which is basically an extension of your typical Common Core bullshit. Anyways, I was thinking about writing on the cover some lengthy disparage against the whole system. I'll almost certainly get a near-perfect score (have gotten one on every FCAT since 3rd grade) so it might be sent up the ranks, though likely not. I know it'll just be read by one guy grading in a dank room somewhere obscure but maybe, just maybe it can get to them. Anyways, if you want my to write anything I'll take suggestions. Won't provide pics as phones will probably be taken at the door but I'll try without getting it disqualified.

This seems to be purely speculative. I seriously doubt Bill Gates is some sort of evil mastermind behind it all (although it's not hard to believe how some more corrupt people would use the Gates' names and connections to make donations seem more innocuous). Basically, the evidence is there for CC being supported by markets, but the "Why" is purely speculative.

My understanding is that states were bribed with large sums of money, with one of the catches to accepting it was that in the future they would have to accept the new "standards" as they were developed.

Not that I'm not saying that it isn't possible but highly unlikely even in CC. I went though when it was No Child Left Behind and learned multiplication in 3rd grade, I was doing algebra when I was 15.
If you are serious though, an abacus really works wonders for figuring out algebra since it can be used as a visual aid.

Even in those babby tier classes the students can do basic algebra like multiplication and division, just enough math to get through life. Like I said, I'd suggest using an abacus or other visual aid in multiplication. While it may not be suitable for the calculus I work with an abacus is one of the best aids to figure out the puzzle that is Common Core mathematics.

What happens is you learn how to get the right answer with basic math and the when you start doing more difficult math as you get older you start seeing how the earlier shit all comes together and go "ohh so that's how it is", but that's because it takes a long time to "get it" and there's no time to teach it all in one grade.

kinda like learning about the ones, tens, hundreds etc place values when adding something like 32+11 is the same as (30+10)+(2+1), but that's not something you teach someone learning basic addition because they won't get it, or it'll take too long to get it.

>>797464 This is why liberals should not be teaching morality to kids (the state, too, for that matter). This dilemma gives zero context and circumstance–just, the groundhog is mean because he did not share. Rather than, he did not share, because he potentially has an entire family of groundhogs to feed, and he worked and tilled this land into what it was through his own effort and will. The socialist animals DID NOT ASK ONCE why he would not share. They just immediately assumed that he was a Greedy Groundhog, held him hostage, and stole the fruits of his labor. This analogy perfectly represents the ideology of a liberal. It is hilarious.

Communists at least have this idea that everyone would work together and everyone will work. Meanwhile these animals aren't trying to work with the groundhog and get the food like Communists or barter the bags with the groundhog for food like Capitalists. Instead they're tying up the groundhog, going into his garden and taking his food without anything in exchange. At least Capitalists and Communists have an idea where everyone benefits in some way or another, this is pure Niggerdom where parasite behavior is accepted and causes civilization to collapse.
The only way this eases me is if this was actually a heavily edited Ben Garrison story.
