    U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper's interview with makes it clear that the trigger for this broader—but still not total—pullout of troops from Syria is that the rug got pulled from under them by an SDF-Assad deal prompted by Turkey's invasion.

    SDF appears to have decided to hand over Kobane and Manbij to the Syrian government, backstopped by Russia. This region could have been cut off by Turkey, and it's almost certainly the same region that U.S. troops are now withdrawing from. :

    Using what appears to be military radio recordings, and link air strikes on Syrian medical facilities to Russia. Four targets were on the UN's no strike list, meaning their coordinates had been given to Russia so they wouldn't be bombed.
