On Syria/Turkey: (1) Let’s see what happens. I feel like I’ve seen this movie before where a big announcement on Syria is steadily walked back. Also, this could be a very large and challenging operation for the Turkish military.

(3) I have lots of other thoughts and concerns — moral as well as strategic — running around in my brain at the moment but don’t think it wise to blast them all out onto Twitter before we know more and I’ve thought more.

(4) I strongly supported our decision to partner with the SDF in 2015 — they were the best available ground force in Syria, and we needed a partner on the ground to roll back ISIS — but I was nonetheless surprised our decision to do so didn’t garner more criticism outside Turkey.

(5) Likewise — and I realize I sound like an AKP mouthpiece here, apologies — I am a little surprised by journalists and analysts lamenting this announcement without wrestling with the paradox of us having partnered with the PKK in the first place.
