So much fear in now. This city defeated ISIS against all odds with US support. There is even a Trump restaurant in as a sign of thanks for previous US support. Now they have to fear a Turkish invasion. Civilians in Kobani now ask me: what is going to happen?

  4. When I started covering the Middle East I was told two things early on which have proved unnervingly accurate. 1: Don't mess with the House of Saud. 2: The Kurds always get fucked over.

  6. 1. Just got home from a week in Syria. A few things that are clear from our interviews: -Baghdadi speech calling for a prison break had profound impact inside camps/prisons. Sept 30th violence in Hol was direct result of these women feeling ISIS leaders still cares about them.

  7. First the Kurds incurred unimaginable losses fighting against ISIS. Then we asked them to carry the burden and risk of housing around 80,000 captured men, women, and children. And now, we are abandoning them entirely. Shame.

  10. When peaceful protesters poured into Iraqi streets this week, the govt shut down the internet, imposed a curfew, deployed security forces and was unapologetic when they opened fire on demonstrators. As of Saturday, 91 people are dead and over 2000 wounded

🇮🇶 Iraq: the people are no longer settling for the crappy deal they were handed post-saddam. Instead of a centralized dictatorship, Iraq became a violent plutocracy.

Great piece by - how can we ask Canadians to trust our national security agencies if we can’t even get basic info to the public? We MUST do better and failure to meaningfully do so is one of Trudeau’s unfulfilled promises.
