However else we agree to discuss this, "abandoning the Kurds" is an appallingly tendentious way that should be avoided.

To reiterate where we began: whatever is said about Trump's disastrous policy or lack of policy in , this exacerbation of the - war, spreading it into Syria, and empowering an actor likely to join the / system, is entirely the work of the Obama people.

Had always seemed likely that if made a move in Syria, would step out of the way. This isn't cost-free, however. A lot of powerful political forces in Washington (and the media) will want to make Ankara pay a price for pushing the U.S. out.

The meme circulating that can't be trusted to deal with the prisoners is effective propaganda, but little more. (a) Trump doesn't actually care what happens re prisoners; (b) Nor does the /, which makes deals and lets Daeshis go as and when it suits it >>

If your solution to a terrorist statelet was to displace it with different terrorists who are the sworn enemies of a NATO ally, and hope said NATO state would get used to this mortal threat on their borders, perhaps it wasn't a very good "counterterrorism" policy to begin with?

Sadly there was no scenario in which things in N. Syria would go well. These contradictions were built into a US CT policy that predates Trump. A US-Turkish war over this (which some seem to have expected?) was never happening either. Not a hot take, more like a reheated one.

And in a year or two, maybe three, when people ask, “How’d we get here? I thought this was sorted,” the media’s monomaniacal Trump-a-rama at the expense of the rest of the world is going to come in for major scrutiny.
