  1. Iraq's problems are way deeper than just political corruption; it's a religious country except in name. Judges don't enforce laws that prevent minor marriage; this judge is oking (an illegal) minor marriage on camera Only one employee processed 126 minor marriages in 6 weeks.

  2. In another example, a senior cleric runs a prostitution ring under the name of 'pleasure marriage'. A woman says one night three different men slept with her: 'I felt abused. I was forced, raped'.

  3. From BBC doc on pleasure marriage in Iraq (AKA 'halal' prostitution): A Shia cleric who is also a member of a PMU militia says you can 'temporarily' marry any girl older than nine for an hour to few days - if she is virgin, just don't enter - but you are allowed to do anal sex.

  5. Anyone familiar with Turkey knows invading NE Syria (most people won’t trust US) and settling Syrian refugees there is wildly popular among Turks across party affiliations (again minus HDP). Most Turks see Rojava invasion as a matter of survival:

  6. I would go as far as saying the Syrian issue (refugees + Rojava) is a bigger factor than economy for Erdogan’s future given that economy may lead to AKP vote decline to an extent but tackling Syrian issue can rebound the votes and move parties such as Iyi to Erdogan’s coalition.

  7. Syrian refugees and Rojava have become major factors in Turkish internal politics; you can’t look at the issue of NE Syria as separate from what is going on inside Turkey. There’re credible reports of nationalist anti-refugee Iyi party joining Erdogan’s coalition as soon as Jan.

Two things are clear: 1- Turkish invasion of NE Syria is inevitable; 2- US (especially Trump) isn't going to protect SDF SDF needs to get creative about ways to protect their territory and they need to act fast; I hope they have learnt from Afrin attack and get more flexible.

Turkish invasion of NE Syria is inevitable (resettling Syrian refugees to Rojava has become a matter of survival for Erdogan and such invasion has the backing of all Turkish opposition minus HDP), the Q is: what are SDF's options and how prepared they are for such an attack?

Bloodbath it is. I hope the blood of these brave protesters lead to real change. Iraq is one of the richest countries in the world but massive corruption - $1 trillion estimated to have been stolen since 2013. Iraqi people, which have a rich and proud history, deserve better.

53 dead and 1940 injured in four days of protest in Baghdad and south ; in addition to live ammunition, snipers have been stationed in Baghdad that target protesters. This is the bloodiest round of protest from the string of protests that hit Iraq every year since 2015.

Journalists and reporters are being threatened with death for disseminating news about the protests. Unknown insurgents have burned the offices of TV networks that have provided media coverage of the demonstrations.
