I've been told "paki go home" more times since Brexit June 2016 than in th 10 years before that. We are definitely going backwards to the bad old days of the 70s

As a white man I used to kid myself that Britain was becoming less racist but Brexit has shown me to be massively wrong - they never stopped being racist they just didn't say it loud. I'm guessing you could have told me that all along.
-
I was the same. I genuinely though Britain wasn’t racist. And then I had a black girlfriend. Some of the shit my friends came out with was horrendous. I had just never seen it before

I agree it was a real eye opener. We lasted about a year or so from aged 17-19 give or take
-
But I also had a similar awakening when I started getting female colleagues/adult friends. The wolf whistling and cat calling was horrendous

Main surprising thing for me about this is the fact that so many people are surprised it's still happening. Although that's not surprising either. How many times have those of us faced with this type of behaviour/language been dismissed because we have a chip on our shoulder.

This is a key point. Just as men tend to downplay women's experiences of sexism, white people tend to downplay BME experiences of racism. Those reactions aren't deliberately prejudiced, but they are an excellent example of how racism (and sexism) are structural.

Read This Bridge Called My Back. It’s a compilation of Black women and women of color essays on feminism during Second Wave feminism. It’s quite powerful.

I have been told the same, and appreciate Naga’s candid answer to Dan’s question asking how such a comment made by the POTUS no less made her feel.
-
What? Well, we love having you back home, here in Wolverhampton Beverley. We all need to call out racism. It has no place in 21st century Britain (or America).

Ashamed of the people who would say this to you. You always handle yourself with grace and class, two qualities those poeple will never have.

Even if she didn't handle herself with grace and class, there is no place for racism in an allegedly "civilized " society.

Sir Lenny Henry once did a really cool show called "Lenny Go Home" where he went back to his old stomping grounds in Dudley. I thought it was the perfect way to poke fun of and educate those ignorant people.
