    Caveats: 1. Campaign in 2014 was full on from get go, huge rallies right away & throughout. This year there not much campaigning 1st half. 2. What’s different this time is wider violence is also seen as impact on election — to shrink space. So it’s all out rather than targeted

    One of the negatives of inflating the voter registration numbers — as many claimed had happened in parliamentary elections and we are using same list for this vote — is then the embarrassment of, say, a 2 million turnout. That would bring you to about 25% at best.

    Biggest challenge for Afghanistan’s Saturday election is turn out. Security threats remain the main factor. 9 million voters reportedly have registered but not clear how many will show up.

    At least 3 children ,age, 9,12 and 13 killed in Pak-military artillery&shelling attacks in Kunar’s Shultan since yesterday 5PM. Omar&Imran - two brothers from Shultan’s SUNU hamlet killed. 13 year old Samiullah son of Habib , killed in Gojyajay hamlet,Tribal elders tells me.

    In 2012, MOD Khalid was blown up by a suicide bomber and he barely survived — took him several years to recover, now back at it. MOI Andarabi leads at least two provincial police chiefs who are missing a leg each. “We are a nation of the wounded,” Khalid smiled.

    In Helmand today MOI Andarabi & MOD Khalid visited parliamentarian Ghulam Wali Afghan. Ghulam Wali lost both legs as a border police officer…

    The soldiers/officers have played their part at cost of life & limb — Hassamuddin, police chief of Helmand, lost a leg in Greshk to an attack on the 2014 vote. If the vote goes to a dispute & political crisis again, which’s a sad possibility, the cloud will hang over ANDSF again

    This year, the security forces carry an even heavier load — tens of thousands of forces have taken additional duties to protect a difficult vote amid a war raging more violent than before, and a Taliban insurgency threatening to disrupt like never before.

    As Afghan elections have gotten messier over the years, one thing has improved: the role the country’s security forces have played in helping with logistics of a massive undertaking, and trying to protect the right of politicians to rally and voters to exercise their choice.

    President Ghani, in interview with , says he is ready to answer to accusations against him. But he refused opportunity for debate...and some of those accusations were made on a debate stage he pulled out of last minute, even aft his security had arrived at venue.

    President Ghani’s campaign slogan is “we will be held accountable, and we will hold accountable.” Yet he refused to attend a single debate with other candidates present to answer for how he has led over the past five years, instead opting for solo interviews.

    Abdullah on transitional justice: we need to be focused on the injustices of today, then get to the past. Hekmatyar: anyone who has ordered bombings ordered killings need to be tried and punished in ways that’s a lesson for future generations. (Many would welcome that.)
