    et il y a une inégalité évidente entre les beaux quartiers de la rive gauche bien balayés et les ex-quartiers populaires dont les trottoirs sont impraticables et où les ordures peuvent rester 8 jours sans être nettoyées.

    Good question. I think the authoritarian regimes will continue developing the mechanisms of repression that they started after the outbreak of the 2011 uprisings, and initiating “superficial reforms” at the same time. Yet, brutal coercion will be always substituted for dialogue.

    I wonder whether the recent wave of demonstrations in and will cause more authoritarian countries to adopt the model of and , which allows for "breathing space" and relatively undisturbed protests that the government can work around. Thoughts?

    Due to the West’s role in the Iran-Iraq war, Iranian narratives about western hypocrisy and indifference to Iran’s security still shape Tehran’s positions on issues (Iran’s nuclear program, Iran’s missile activity, etc.) that pit Iran against the West.

    Iraq invaded western Iran 39 years ago today. Remember how Saddam predicted an Iraqi victory by the end of 1980? Starting a war with Iran was easier for Iraq than winning one, even with all the Gulf financial support and western arms.
