One wonders how this little sandbagged structure is a "security concern" to a NATO country with F-16s and tanks. The goal here is to get rid of the few defenses that exist so that Ankara can be moved in to take over, like facilitating a new Afrin but without the airstrikes

The only "security concern" is Ankara's constant threats. That is an actual concern.

How long before foreign YPG volunteers get rounded up for being "premature anti-fascists"?

The USA could have if they had backbone brought afrin to the negotiation table with turkey but you're right they are selling them out

NATO and NATO commitments > anything else. ISIS was never more than a sideshow for the US. The US isn’t about to completely turn its back on a NATO partner over some relatively trivial ISIS mission in a nation that didn’t invite the US.

Ironic that Trump, against his advice, agreed to a pullout during a phone call with Erdogan. He does have "legitimate business interests" there after all!

Jake, they're knocking down tiny bunkers that can be replaced in a few hours to appease Turks, while real fortifications remain. If they start blowing up large sections of concrete bunkers, I'll worry. This is window dressing to shut up the Turks.
-
The YPG is a legitimate security concern for Turkey in the same way the YPG is a legitimate security concern for the SAA or the US is a legitimate security concern for ISIS. It's a concern of Turkey's making, but the language isn't wrong.
-
And all of this is being done to avoid a straight up Turkish invasion of Kobane and elsewhere, something that Turkey would far prefer. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but I'd far prefer this to watching Turkey steamroll the SDF and kill a shit ton of people in the process.
-
Yes this deal is the best solution to avoid mass slaughter & displacement, but the YPG never carried out cross-border attacks. They can destroy these without reifying the BS Turkish narrative about security concerns.
-
If that's how diplomacy with Turkey worked, I'd be happy. That isn't. You know as well as I that turkey sees ZERO difference between YPG/PKK, so this is the reality we live with.
-
If they were destroying PKK fortifications in Qandil or the Zab River Valley this would be appropriate language. YPG/PKK have not attacked Turkey from Syria.
