In Turkey, the secular elite mostly known as ‘Beyaz Turks’ called those who voted AK Parti as ‘beton kafali’. Some even argued that their votes shouldn’t be equal to votes of the ‘educated’. They finally realised they can’t win elections this way. Now, they keep it to themsleves.

In Egypt, the secular elite called those who voted Morsi as ‘kharfan’ or the sheep. They used it repeatedly to dehumanise the conservative base. It was a psychological preparation for their slaughter. Hence when Rab’a massacre happened, many celebrated.

Secularism in Middle East is synonymous with authoritarianism, military coups and personal cults. We are yet to witness the birth of an original MENA-grown secular movement that is democratic as well. They have been more damaging to democracy than many radical religious movements
