If I’ve learned one thing from Turkish Twitter it’s to never mention Syrians and the beach in one sentence, apparently Syrians swimming is a big red line that shall never be crossed (Here a uni professor and firmer MP is condemning Syrians for enjoying the beach during the war)

The green flag was the only flag adopted by real civilian and armed revolutionaries against french colonization, and the only one raised by truly elected democratic politicians of the Syrian Republic.

The original flag of Syria is the green one with three red stars, it was the revolutionary flag against the French mandate, not adopted by it as the current Assad regime propaganda spread. It was our flag since 36-58 and between 61-63

63-72 Syria had the same one in the pic but with 3 stars representing a never realized union (Egypt, Iraq, and Syria) 72-80 Syria had a flag with a Hawk/Eagle, which is the flag of another never realized union of Egypt, Libya and Syria. It is nearly the same current Egyptian flag

As a misconception by many, this flag was the UAR flag 58-61, then Egypt flag 61-72, it was only adopted by Syria in early 80s by the de facto dictatorship regime. So it is a total nonsense when many insist that it is the "legitimate" flag of Syria.

I’m too angry and full of hatred to ever cohesively comment on Max Blumenwhatever and Rania Khalik’s trip to Syria, my own country which I cannot go to yet they’re able to go on straight up propaganda whitewashing tours.

I don't believe in 'they're good on domestic but bad on foreign policy', when 'bad' on foreign policy means endorsing the mass extermination of an entire nation, and fuelling misinformation against a vulnerable people. Our humanity cannot be compartmentalised and selective.

Recent drama in parliament, with a racist PM and his attack on our democracy, has allowed Labour to regain their holier than thou attitude. In reality, they remain supporters of dictators and of crimes against humanity, and are wholly unfit to lead.

It’s not ludicrous, try looking up facts before being on the defence. Refoulement has taken place despite Turkey’s commitment to IHL - and against people who *hold* an Istanbul kimlik.

I hope and other Turkish chains don’t normalise populist racism among their employees, particularly not when elderly people with diabetes and blood pressure are involved - who thought they’d find comfort in such a cafe on a hot day.

To ask in Turkish, and be ignored - so turn to English and have an employee angrily tell you ‘no Arabic’ because he can’t see beyond your ‘Arab’ scarf and then turn his back on you is abhorrent customer service.

How incredibly sad that after almost 3 years here one would face not one, but three racist employees at in Forum Istanbul who assume that just because you’re Arab you can be treated rudely and made to wait despite accompanying a [very clearly] elderly man.

That’s why, for example, we defend the right of members to fair justice and freedom from torture. People flip out “how could you?!” “Why focus on these vile creatures?” Because they too are human and protecting their rights is part of protecting all of our rights as humans
