...by the end of the Obama admin, I thought we were maybe halfway out of that fog... now I'm not sure we ever will be, as a country or a (collective) people. I don't subscribe to the "tragedy as tests from god" narrative, but if I did 9-11 is Pearl Harbor's opposite: We failed.

Obama’s foreign policy was not in any way getting out of our atrocious policies. Drones, jailing whistleblowers, killing civilians overseas, invasions without congressional approval...it was still bad bad bad.
News sites have become dependent on terrorism threats and national security for easy stories now - if there's a "slow news day" they can pull something out or interview an expert to rile up hatred and views.
That's sort of a false equivalency. With Pearl Harbor, there was a World War going on. With 9/11 it was just a bunch of religious zealots that didn't like us and decided we deserved mass murder.
