Yeah, I’m subtweeting but I’m mad that I had to see this on my TL. Describing imperial Japan’s actions as “stupid” and not idk “horrifying” or “terrible” or “a flagrant violation of human rights” already trlls me that you’re on that apologism juice.

“But the mangaka didn’t mean it that way” - WE KNOW!! Multiple artists who spoke up on this issue said they know! Regardless of what the mangaka intended, the similar imagery is still CLEARLY controversial in countries that have suffered under Japanese imperialism.
Show this thread -
Treating other artists like idiots “spreading misinformation” when they literally have said they don’t fault the mangaka and want cosplayers and fanartists to take caution is shitty. Especially when the JPN govt to this day refuses to admit to war crimes.

Have you considered that the revisionist Japanese educational system and the nationalist right stance of Shinzo Abe has negatively impacted your view of what is and isn’t acceptable in other countries?
Show this thread -
Or that perhaps by teaching this issue IN YOUR TEXTBOOKS, you could avoid people making mistakes like drawing something that might be immediately misconstrued as a symbol of war crimes?
Show this thread -
Instead of advocating for your government to change, you're taking your anger out on people who literally suffered from your country's imperialism, you're just being defensive about Japan. You don't really care about the victims.

Positioning yourself as this cool-headed logical choice over the "nasty" angry Koreans is incredibly transparent. Yeah, OP was "nasty" - as people tend to get when their grandparents lived through occupation and their country has been split in two as a result of said occupation.
Show this thread -
You don't think "angry Koreans" has been used in Japanese history to literally justify massacres? Do you know that Koreans were called 불령선인/不逞鮮人/Futei Senjin if they didn't fit in line with imperial Japanese ideology?
Show this thread -
Also acting like "oh people are so quick to believe this stuff" and presenting Japan as this misunderstood powerless country is... so disingenuous?? For the longest time Western countries ONLY believed Japan? Because y'all literally took sovereignty away from Korean people?

As a last point, to everyone saying that rising sun flag imagery is acceptable because the show is set in the Taisho era before WWII - please understand that the Taisho era starts in 1912. Japanese occupation of Korea started in 1910. Japanese imperialism existed before WWII.

One thing that’s pissing me off about the situation are the non asians vehemently latching onto Asians that aren’t offended by the flag as a way to dismiss concerns. And Asians that ARE concerned are viewed as sensitive. Do they only care about Asians that support their beliefs?
-
Yeah, that gets me angry too! It's wild because people are claiming that SEAsians... don't care about the issue when orgs like Lila Pilipina routinely call out Japanese war crimes and have publicly said that the rising sun flag is a symbol of imperialism.
-
The cherry-picking for "good Asians" that align with their worldview is so... oof gross
-
Exactly! It’s a tactic I see over and over again and it’s borderline dehumanizing. Not everyone’s experiences are universal and this tokenism/ cherry picking is absolutely tiring...
-
I have also seen people claiming Asians living outside of Asia don't count as Asians and are laughable for discussing this issue. While simultaneously lauding the Asians (who may or may not live in Asia) who say they don't care about it. ???the irony and hypocrisy is ridiculous
-
Absolutely, so much invalidation because "lmfao it's an Asian American lecturing to REAL Asians :tm:". Like oh, I didn't realize that being a citizen of another country besides my family's origin country made me qualify as white, TIL.
-
Lol they just say "American" as if the Asian half of the identity doesn't exist??? If that's how race/culture worked we wouldn't have any racism or immigration or even refugee issues, we could all just move to America and cash in that automatic green card

people who says its a hanafuda card and not the rising sun flag i guess fail to recognize the rising sun symbol can exist on things... that aren't the flag....
-
It’s also funny because like yes we know the author did not mean to intentionally evoke the rising sun flag. But specifically drawing rays on the moon hanafuda card makes the imagery uncomfortably close.
-
And everyone claiming that it’s “a flower” because of hanafuda means “flower cards” are literally dumb. There isn’t actually a hanafuda card that even looks like Tanjiro’s earrings other than the moon card.
