Given I've spent today tweeting about the rap Susamam, it is worth noting the prescience and the tragedy of the lyrics. Almost everything they're saying in their art is the reality that Turkey faces.

Bir bilgi daha ekleyeyim. Selçuk Kozağaçlı ve diğer ÇHD'li avukatları yargılayan heyet sanıkların tahliyesine karar verdi. Bir hafta içinde o heyet gitti yerine Kaftancıoğlu'nu mahkum eden başkanın heyeti geldi. O yeni heyet ÇHD'lileri 11 ila 18 yıla mahkum etti. Tesadüf tabii.

CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu has been sentenced to a total of 9 years and 8 months imprisonment today in relation to her social media posts going back to 7 years. Once again freedom of expression has been seriously curtailed in Turkey.

Kaftancıoğlu's unforgivable sin was to coordinate the opposition in the Istanbul elections and help reveal the massive corruption networks established by the AKP in the last quarter century.

Judicial Reform Package, anyone? Or better yet "the judiciary in Turkey is free and independent", any takers? Or let's go one set closer and remember the words of the Head of the Union of Bar Associations, Metin Feyzioğlu:

"Coincidence, of course. Everything in the Turkish judiciary is simply coincidence. It's the same presiding judge that sentence Selahattin Demirtaş to 4 years & 8 months, sentenced Canan Kaftancıoğlu to 9 years & 8 months, and sentence Selçuk Kozağaçlı to 11 years & 3 months."

Presumably (please note I'm not a lawyer, and please correct me if I am wrong) Kaftancıoğlu will go to jail when/if the regional appeals court confirms the sentencing. (I personally expect this to be 'when' rather than 'if').

The total sentence Kaftancıoğlu has received on multiple charges is 9 years and 8 months. Because no single sentence is greater than 5 years, she will appeal to the regional appeals court. Currently no arrest warrant has been issued.
