College Coaching Moves: Demko leaves UNC Asheville for GW women's job

Michelle Demko, who spent the last eight years as the head coach at UNC Asheville, has been named the George Washington women’s head coach.

UNC Asheville increased its win total in each of her first six seasons at the helm. Previously, she had stints as an assistant coach at N.C. State (2003-06) and Nebraska (2007-10), where she served as the Huskers’ recruiting coordinator.

Demko, who played at Maryland, was a pro with the Philadelphia Charge in the WUSA and three different clubs in the Frauen Bundesliga.

“I am honored to join the Colonial family,” said Demko. “This institution has a rich tradition of excellence in competition, classroom and community. I am excited to step into my role and lead this program to help further that tradition. The women’s soccer program has been successful for a number of years."

Demko replaces Sarah Barnes, who was hired as the new head coach at the University of Miami. The Colonials have a 48-23-8 record over the last four years.
