  12. Lovely. Every time I've gone from a Spanish to Arabic speaking country (or vice versa), and I did so five times in my diplomatic career, I encountered the same trill. Fortunately the two languages were not "forgotten" but gathering dust in a warehouse of the mind.

  13. Hard to say what, if anything we are missing. "Most Dangerous Game" is the obvious influence some have mentioned plus countless other movies. Another could be the brilliant 1952 "Sound of His Horn" by the former UK diplomat John William Wall ("Sarban") but that is little known.

  16. What they did in January 2016 in detaining two USN riverine boats and publicly humiliating their American crew emboldened them. Think that scenario is very unlikely to be repeated but self-deception by such regimes can be a problem.

  17. I remember us hosting a lovely Native American poet in Damascus more than 20 years ago who innocently asked folks at the Syria Writers Association if they had Syrian-Kurdish or other types of ethnic writers like in the US. The nervous answer was, "no, we are all the same here."
