「今日の詩」の選者は詩の送付は３００回に達したと通知してきた。最近同じ詩がメイルされて来るのが目立つようになった。今日も過去に送付された詩の一覧からから、バイロン卿の「センナケリブの破滅」を取り上げることにした。 英語版ウィキペディアはこれを項目として取り上げているので私は簡単な解説を参照してみた。The Destruction of Sennacheribは旧約聖書の列王伝下の１８－１９章にある物語を素材にしている。私も今その箇所を読んだところである。聖書の主張は神が死の天使を遣わして敵を滅ぼしたのであり、エルサレムの民の努力ではないとのことである。 ウィキペディアによれば、馬の蹄の響きを想わせる韻律と欽定聖書の文体を尊重しているそうである。私の国語力では到底叶わぬ目標である。その分析と訳の修正は他日に譲ることにしてひとまず投稿することにした。 The Destruction of Sennacherib I The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold, And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold; And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea, When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee. Personally, I am very interested in Christianity, especially Catholicism. So when I see paintings on Catholicism or Bible's stories, I am in relaxed mood.^^ One thing that I would like to do in Paris is to go to mass in a cathedral
like Notre Dame de Paris in listening to pipe organ.

I am not interested in Christianity though not an atheist. But I am enthusiastic at the Counter-Reformist artists. In music, an English-born professor, baptized Protestant, confessed me that he prefered Catholic music, especially Palestrina (1526-1594) to Johan Sebastian Bach's Reformist Music. Palestrina's "Stabat Mater" is so moving. I know some Protestants who were converted to Catholic.

The most famous ezample is Swedish Queen Christina. Her father was Gustav Adolf who fought for the Protestant Cause and were killed in battle during 30 Years War. Her conversion may be not for theological reason, I guess. In my opinion, she was fascinated with Catholic musics in Saint Peter Cathedral.

I heard an organ music roll out at the K??ln Cathedral and so moved that I could not leave the church awhile. Unforgettable experience!

In fine art, Murillo was representing the Counter-Reformist painters. He is reknowned for Immaculate Conception of Virgin.. So many faked Virgin are witness to his poularity.

ご紹介ありがとうございます。ムソルグスキーに限らず歌曲や合唱曲の題材が、歴史や文学、絵画、時間や地理を超えて繋がっていることに感動を覚えます。センナへリブの陥落をもう一度聴きなおしてみます。

作曲家は詩人の原作やその翻訳となると忠実ではありませんね。ムソルグスキーがはたしてどんな露訳に付曲したのか興味ありますね。今だったら訴訟になりそうな改ざんを作曲家はしますから。それにしても馬のヒズメの響きを農耕民族の日本人に表せるのでしょうか。ムソルグスキーの曲が聴いてみたいです。
