    He is right about this. Having established Kurdish political forces in the region, makes it much harder for Turkey to deny Kurds in Turkey basic political and human rights. They will happily risk a greater war than be forced to coexist peacefully.

    Turkey will pay higher price later if does not act in Syria - Erdogan

    They know that anything they do, if they can find any solution within their limited framework, can at ANY TIME be undermined by the President's mood or by a random phone call from Erdogan or Putin. 4/4

    it out. However they cannot do much when there is no political will nor interest in the White House, they are handicapped & must work within a very limited & contradictory framework. I don't think anybody in Pentagon or the US military has any confidence in their President. 3/4

    People say that the US is in a difficult position in NE Syria. But it's 100% their own fault. When Trump randomly, without any thought or analysis, announced they are pulling out after Erdogan called him in December, the US lost all their leverage. The US had strong cards on 1/4

    Turkey’s threatened invasion comes at the exact moment when they are rounding up and deporting thousands of Syrian refugees. The plan is to forcibly uproot Syrians who have built lives in Turkey, and chuck them into the homes of ethnically cleansed Kurds.

    Erdogan calls the plan to deploy more Turkish troops in a “safe zone.” But no one I met in Syria uses that euphemism. Kurds & Arabs alike refer to the plan as an occupation or intervention. call it a “corridor of Turkish genocide.” ⁦⁩

    And there is no upside for US to stay in Syria since 2015...? So getting rid of ISIS since 2015, has no upside? So , you think it would've been better to let ISIS keep murdering civilians & keep Yezidis as sex slaves? 3/3

    Ignoring moral issues. US presence creates stability for millions & the weight of US create opportunity for negotiations to end the civil war. If US leaves, a new massive war will break out in N Syria which might spread to SE Turkey & N Iraq. How is this position progressive? 2/3

    So the progressive case is that regime change = good. But preventing the only progressive development in ME in years, the US allies that sacrificed thousands of lives to get rid of ISIS and free large areas of Syria from ethnic cleansed by US WEAPONS sold to Turkey = bad? 1/3

    Hate 2disagree with As someone who advocated for engagement in 2012-2015, I would argue since fall 2015 there is no upside for staying in Syria anymore. Time 4us 2pack & leave: The progressive case for staying in , for now

    short, incredibly important thread here on northeast , currently under threat by . also would be in serious trouble. many, many people would be displaced again.

    There is always a lot of talk about Idlib, but any Turkish attack will also displace thousands of civilians. Especially in border & local authorities are already taking care of thousands of IDPs & ISIS prisoners. There are more people living in northeast Syria than Idlib.
