"In Raqqa, an Arab SDF fighter from Tel Abyad accompanied MECRA to the city. On the long road to Al-Hol, many of the Asayish, or security, checkpoints are manned by Arabs." @Adam_Lucente I never get into Twitter arguments, but this is a grave mischaracterization of my research. I wrote that Qandil cadres control decision-making. They do not favor "Kurdish interests." In fact, Kurdish areas were neglected under Assad & continue to be neglected now. -
I also never claimed Arabs are absent from SDF/civil admin, just that they don't hold real power. There is a substantive difference between representation & empowerment. Visiting a city accompanied by a soldier is hardly a way to detect carefully hidden power structures.

I think ordinary Arabs are better represented and freer together with Kurds in NE Syria than in any of the 22 Arab states they have created, and this in a precarious war zone with a minority that have been slaughtered and attacked by Arabs again and again and again.

It must be an old habit for arabs not wanting to see Kurds can decide for themselves! Arabs need to get used to Kurds representing themselves on their land and not he shared land.

Equivalt to Assad supporters initially saying most soldiers of Syrian army are Sunnis. True but most commanders, or most of who hold power over soldiers were not Sunnis.
