Directories are delimited by forward slashes in URLs and backslashes in Windows operating systems. What appears to be directories in URLs may not correspond to the actual directories in which the files are located. For example, consider the following URL:
https://meatonomics.com/2014/11/25/can-they-suffer-pain-in-insects-spiders-and-crustaceans/
It appears to be the case that the root directory contains a directory named "2014", and 2014 contains a subdirectory: "11"; "25" is a directory, and its parent directory is 11. However, since directories shown in web addresses can be virtual, the actual directory could be a singular directory: 20141125. Or maybe it is hexadecimal: 1335445; or maybe it is another system of the many possible systems for naming and organizing directories. In the first case, delimiters are added to encourage users to view content from 2014-11-25, 2014-11, and 2014 at the following respective addresses:
