The FAA put two inexperienced engineers in charge of reviewing MCAS, which turned out to be a deadly new software. Then the agency gave Boeing the ability to approve the system without any FAA input. Then Boeing made the system more aggressive.

An FAA pilot knew about the change. But it wasn’t his job to assess safety. FAA engineers only realized how little they knew about MCAS after the first Lion Air crash. They still kept the plane flying. Months later, another Max crashed, killing everyone on board.

We went to Seattle. Knocked on doors. Got internal FAA documents and emails. Talked to more than a dozen people involved in the Max approval. Many said they felt powerless — when they challenged Boeing, their managers often sided with the company.

Illustrates the swing from the regulatory/enforcement-oriented Jane Garvey FAA to the customer-centric Marion Blakey FAA (who then left for the Aerospace Industry Association, like Bahrami, and now at R-R), which never swung back to regulatory mode.

Great reporting. But how come I haven't seen any comments from Elaine Chao on the Boeing mess. Isn't she the cabinet member in charge of the FAA?

The FAA was driven by one thing alone Boeing is a big defense Contractor and money always talks especially in this Country the safety of that plane has no consideration at all.

Makes me wonder what else have they missed using this flawed certification process?

Instead of a new design, let's just move the wings back and put in bigger engines. That's like putting a big V8 and big rear tires on a '32 Ford and being bewildered that it does wheelies.

This is total BS. Just look at all the bad drugs the FDA approves. Boeing / Airlines do a better job at regulating themselves than the government. This is just a scare tactic by the fake news media.
