The woman asking was a Muslim. All panel was Muslim. The event was organized by a Muslim organization. Can't Muslims be self critical? It is a problem in many Muslim communities

. kind of pointless since virtually none of the issues covered actually improve the position of the rich or the poor to any substantial extent, nor are the poor as such mobilized around ANY of the issues.

This is stupid. Saudi Arabia doesn't need anything on POTUS. Most of the DC FoPo. practioners believe no matter how fucked KSA can be, that it's better to have a KSA buying US arms with limits than switching to Russ/Chinese arms with no limits whatsoever on what they target.

An ordinary person, I'm afraid. This horrifying link between the ordinary and the monstrous is much older than us, and it will prevail after we're gone. The extraordinary person here is the Butcher of Damascus. An extraordinary murderer, a genocidal maniac beyond expectations.

Bloody hell - I cannot even imagine... A father in today, desperately trying to climb down to his 2 children - one is stuck within rubble & another, a baby, is hanging mid-air, held up only by its t-shirt.

this is just pretentious. it banks of an innocuous notion of 'difference'. Christianity recognizes sin and evil. Many impeccably Christian denominations don't recommend meeting them with 'radical love' under any sort of government.

finally no serious assessment of Enlightenment attitudes can ignore the fact that most Enlightenment authors moderated their real view out of very well-founded fear of persecution.

. the Enlightenment doesn't fit into a comforting fantasy where critique runs the whole way from 'irreligious' to 'genuinely religious' w/o ever getting naughty and valuing above all what is irreligious.

many Enlightenment thinkers were atheists/agnostics & has no interest in what was 'genuinely religious'. & many would have said that the intolerance was *intrinsic* to 'genuine religions', cf. Hume.

. if "the Enlightenment" had 'a strategy', it was to defang Christianity through analysis of its texts & sceptical critique of its tenets. It aimed to show relgions to be unfounded, not 'illiberal'. BTW 'liberal' wasn't even a concept in the 18th C.
