I am afraid for my friends who have become family. I hate that I feel there is nothing I can do. “It’s the law” does not mean it’s moral.

Being half-Turkish I always tried to turn away from the racist heritage of Turkey and focus on the accepting-multi-ethnic history. I appreciated the current state/government for hosting so many refugees although imperfectly. Now I feel lost.

This really hit home. I usually tweet immediately when something regarding Syrians is happening in Turkey. The truth is I have been in denial and in shock. A strong part of my identity was shaped by the accepting nature of Turkey, or how I perceived it rather.

This is a case of an Uyghur resident in Turkey being given notice that he will be ‘returned’ to China; a country which persecutes the Uyghur community and has placed over 1 million of them in detention camps.

    (1) "deported"=legal action taken against people who illegally reside in a country and have violated its laws (2) These are not cases of "deportations" they are cases of refoulement which is clear violation of international law as is still classified as a war zone.

Thread on refugees crackdown in Istanbul - no matter if a person is registered or not/has a work permit or not, a Syrian individual remains a refugee and therefore the principle of non-refoulement should apply.

Seems to be the trend in the region. Genuinely hope Turkey doesn’t go that far.

I wrote column arguing that to deal with anti-refugee sentiment in Turkey, fueled by craven politicians and poor economy, is for Arab & western nations to take in more refugees and Turkey to push for peace settlement in Syria & clarify its strategic goals

I'm not exaggerating here, if this were a Muslim group the media and European politicians would be losing their shit

I must add that the BBC as always got the headline wrong. No one went out in the streets for Erdogan. No one would die for another person. We went out in the streets for something much bigger and we will again if the need arises.

I would like to remind that Syrians fought alongside us that day:

Oddly I do miss the days that followed. There was no hatred, towards anyone, even Syrians. We were together because we fought together.

No matter what people may think outside of Turkey we will not let go of those rights without a fight.

Yesterday I kept trying to tweet about the because I knew it was important to get the message out. But honestly the experience was too real and too scary. My family members came close to death, and many did lose their families. We fought for our rights and we won.

Three years ago some analysts were penning draft op-eds to welcome a military dictatorship, & certain politicians were waiting to give speeches praising the putschists for 'restoring democracy'. The Turkish people stood in the way of tanks so they could write a different history.
