Interesting report on the war which is now a glocal and geopolitical battle between Middle Eastern powers (/ vs. ) and European states ( vs. ). Don't sleep on the competition between the Turks and the Emiratis in greater region.

One of the elements of 's book that makes it truly excellent is his coverage of the early battles vs. in and that are barely remembered now. Like Tal Hamis in Syria and Shengal (Sinjar) in Iraq. Before the world's cameras came, he stood witness.

6/ We set forth our own proposal and conditions of safe zone: -Withdrawal of YPG fighters and heavy weapons to 5 km southwards from the border -No Turkish presence, international forces must patrol -Guarantee by TR that it would not attempt to carry out any attack.

Until chatting with leaders in N/E , I had underestimated just how important the /'s experiences in 2013-2014 in Ras Al Ayn (Serê Kaniyê) were to help inform them on how to build a pan-communal force to counter . The seed of the SDF was really sown then.

Interesting article to consider when studying the current - impasse over the so-called "Safe Zone." Remember this region of is communally diverse and it's not so easy for the US team led by Amb Jeffrey to just tell the // to go away. They are locals.

Fantastic points. Why is America's best partner against , which it entrusts with preventing the reemergence of in , given the cold shoulder by OFAC when the FSA (includes extremist groups like Ahrar Al Sham) given a waiver? Crazy.

I don't think it's a good idea to delist and to greenlight giving that organization ATGMs to use against 's forces in . Not a good idea at all. But maybe the powers at be are in Afghanistan 1980s mode or something wanting to create a quagmire for .

Interesting dynamic. The resistance movement (armed and simply political) often flies under the radar but it is an important factor when considering how foreign actors might try to intervene inside . Some of these groups lobby hard in Western capitals now.

A nonstate actor which just defeated ISIS in physical battle now holding women (and their children) who held out until the end. Being asked to house, feed, provide services 4 them while recognized by no one with few resources and facing numbers to care for that no one expected.

Was in Hol camp and folks running the camp pleaded for help and resources. You are asking people who just defeated Isis on battlefield to keep safe their fighters’ families and children in numbers no one expected. This is not work a nonstate actor can do on its own.

This has been unfolding in real time with SDF and US asking for international help. This requires an international solution and resources.

Does the SDF face challenges on this issue? Of course they do. But simply by not letting any ISIS members immediately back into positions of power, they've already done a better job at handling defeated radicals than many Western countries historically have.

For folks who want to keep a close eye on dynamics on the ground in N/E , I highly recommend the Rojava Information Center (). Having talked to them at length while in the zone, I came away very impressed with the granularity of their knowledge.

The / (and ancillary branch for local defense, HXP) is putting a lot of energy into recruiting Arab fighters. If the YPG is going to continue recruiting Arabs in significant numbers, when does it allow Arabs to break through the glass ceiling and become leaders?

This article is an intense and provocative refutation of Trump's team on the matter of the so-called "Safe Zone." It would seem to have an audience of just one person, Amb. Jeffrey's boss: Secretary Pompeo.
