Ok so this has been bothering me for a while. My systems analysis and design course says explicitly that programmers should not just start coding right away and should make a very detailed plan first because you cannot change the code later. And it also says that programmers don't generally code right away or change code later. Now that doesn't sit well with me because that is the exact opposite of the impression I've gotten from the programming world. I got the impression that people get and idea, start coding and change it along the way. Almost no project is ever completely closed, code is changed constantly. Did I misjudge?

I recently install some bootable version of I don't even remember what on a USB key.
Now, whenever I plug it in, there are like 10 popups that show up and Windows says I have to format them all to use the device. They're all fucked up sizes. If I do format them, they show up as 10 fucked up different drives.
How do I unfuck this up to get my 8gb key back?

When in Xubuntu I want to know the size of free disk space and want to rightclick>properties,
there is no free white space in the file manager to place the rightclick because the default setting is "file details".
In the Thunar file manager always I have to click "menue>view>symbols".
Where can I click, what can I do, to speed up the process, any shortcut?
I love the commandline, but for this problem I want a fast solution with mouseclicking in the folder/directory and not "df -h and lsblk".

Couldn't reply earlier since the boomer instructor in coding class was hounding me and actually scoured through all my open tabs and notepad files one by one, i really should have closed firefox beforehand kek. In Linux you could used parted to remove all the partitions on the drive
It would be something like:

parted optimal -a /dev/sdb
rm 10
mkpart 1 -1
quit

You would have to find out if /dev/sdb is actually the right device.

I have an amazon fire 8 HD that I wanna remove all of amazon's bloat from. I tried using the adb tools but I need to have root to uninstall via terminal. Anyone have any guide on how to root the fire 8? Firmware is 5.3.6.4 and its the 6th generation. If possible I wanna just install normal android onto it, I know there's a method with cracking open the back and using a paperclip but I was hoping someone knows of an easier way?

Is there a lightweight alternative to visual studio if I only want to compile a c# project? I just want to compile some source code I got from github, I've tried sharp develop but it doesn't support 14.0, I've seen some command line options for compiling a .cs file but this project is many .cs files tied together into a .sln.

So what's the fastest way to compile this project? Would I need to download all the dependencies manually?

Does transfer time matter?
If not, build a small cheap network PC, include as many drives as you want, simply transfer over network to your backup system. If it's important, don't forget to set it up to automatically clone drives. This can be done for like 200$ if you're smart, 400$ if you're as retarded as you seem, I say that because a bone stock 50$ PC on eBay from 2010, namely the mass produced dells, would be ideal for you. Another 150 in storage devices and you're golden.

BIOS boot settings.
Google "(your PC model) BIOS key"
Press that key as it's booting, fairly soon, right after you power on.
Find setting regarding "BOOT SEQUENCE" or something, and change the SSD to position 2. Position 1 should always be USB PORT if it's available on your model, so you can boot from a recovery USB drive if ever needed.

You probably have power settings in bios that specifically address this, it's a very popular ecofag setting for laptops and small form factor PCs.

found an old monitor in the neighborhood's trash dump, would I want to get out of my way and buy a
VGA adaptor to hdmi plus a VGA wire only to test if it works? it sems pretty good for programming as it has a 4:3 display and in theory it turns on just fine (though the screen turns off a few seconds after the "no signal" message, but I'm assuming this is working as intended). I have a GTX 1060 so I can't straight up use VGA

and I didn't have any intentions of getting myself a new monitor any soon, but I wouldn't bother using this one if it happens to still be working well. it's also a bit aesthetic because it looks old as fuck, like 90s/early 2000s old, but I might facial skin might get damaged in the long-run by its shitty display

Im a dorm cuck right now or else I would just build a Nas out of one of the old PCs I have laying around. It's gonna be probably a few hundred gigs of shit. Because it's faster to approximate the mathematical model for the end result than to calculate the end result based on all the mathematical models for each individual part of the end result. Even though doing the latter will actually increase scientific knowledge while doing the former won't.

You want a refresh rate higher than the framerate of your videos but it doesn't have to be that much higher unless you're really picky about cursor movement. you do need as much color accuracy as you can afford. Oled monitors will burn in if they have static elements on then for too long (like a taskbar), but that doesn't matter if you auto hide the taskbar, and cycle through desktop backgrounds.

Basically the sound bar form factor is all about being stuck under a TV screen, as opposed to the audio being the entertainment by itself. So even if there's no /real/ difference in the sound, there's still the symbolic issue.

Anyone use Defraggler? I'm using the free space defrag and I told it not to fragment my files, but my total fragments keeps going up and up. I stopped it after letting it run for 2 hours since I don't know if it was even working or not. I honestly just want to move the files so there's no empty space in the middle and I already know that it won't speed up my computer at all.

So I guess my question is should I just let it finish running? Or not use the free space defrag? The big empty space in the middle is going to bother me.

I don't think it really matters. You have a bit more control over them if you shuck them though. Also, don't use the hardware encryption, that way if the USB controller dies you can just shuck it and use it internally without issues.
For backup, I personally use rsync, but I don't know if that's available to you. I'd suggest to keep one unshucked and back up to that, and store it off-site.

How to I get smaller file sizes with WebM?

Video related was done with Handbrake using their 576p25 1800kbps preset. Do you think this vid is a good size as it is or should I just slam down the bitrate in the future? Is that the best way to get better file sizes?

If you're talking about the weird artefacts at the beginning of the video, that's in the original video. The camera is on the F1 car and it's transmitting wirelessly because they show that video live while the cars are going around. And sometimes the signal is shit. So that's in the original video, it's nothing to do with my transcoding of it. If you watch the rest of the WebM you'll see no artefacts.

Going to be buying a proper mic setup, but I've got a very limited knowledge around interfaces, amps, etc.
I've been looking at the "Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen USB Audio Interface", which seems pretty good.
But I've got a pair of high impedance Beyerdynamics 1990dt pro headphones (250ohm), that requires an amp.
...I'm currently using a cheap Fiio headphone amp, which does the trick.)

So my question would be:
Can I run my headphones straight through the scarlett with no issues? (Does it also act as an amp?)
Or do I have to stick the amp's Line-Out into the headphone jack first? Would that have any significant effect on latency?

Yes, it works as an amp just fine. I plug my guitar directly into the interface and I can use any headphone as a monitor.

Ah okay that does help a bit. So I think according to your formula my video comes out as 0.1736111111, which is way higher than the figures you posted, so I guess I could reduce the bitrate a lot and hopefully it'll still be watchable. Thanks, I guess I'll try reducing it a fair bit.

How do you enter a command in terminal(I'm using ubuntu) so you get the command line.
For example when you type firefox in the command line it opens firefox but you are unable to continue entering things in terminal because it's "got a process running"

Aside from the artifacting which you said was in the original video, that looks fine. For 4chan where you only have 3MB to work with, you're better off just trying to hit that 3MB. Bitrate is just amount of bits over time, so that's always set really. Only other things to improve the quality is to lower resolution, which has different negatives, or to shorten it, which isn't always possible.
Personally I prefer smaller webms that look better over the heavily compressed longer or larger ones.

What certs should I look into when becoming a sysadmin ?
I was looking at MCSA and maybe CCNA since Cisco owns about 90% of the network. I haven't done anything with networking since server 2003 and a little with server 2008, I also got some training with Cisco stuff but that's also from years ago.
Is there anything else I should look into ? A guy told me to get Azure stuff ASAP but that seems a bit too high end and expensive for most businesses except the biggest of corps.

You have front end and back end
And it is branched out even more from then.
So there is no longer just one sysadmin that does everything and getr paid 250k for being the tech badass
You can either go hardware or software, and then it branches from there
You can be the networking guy or the backend guy doing everything that isnt the network stack
So decide what specific exact hardware/software you want to work on first

Works out fine, kinda depends on the program though. If the program is extremely rigid and just outputs 60FPS, then it'll judder on the 100Hz. But a lot of media players have that same problem with 24FPS video on 60Hz monitors.

So I've been using Linux Mint 17 Qiana for about 4 years now, and I just realized the support ended like 3 months ago (April 2019). I also notice this in the software repository, i rarely get upgrades for software anymore and nothing for stuff like python, youtube-dl, flash, etc.
in fact, i can't even use youtube-dl and flash anymore, and firefox has some unpatched bugs too, so i finally realized it's time to switch.

So here's my question, /g/oyim. Which newer Linux version can I have the easiest, least effort transition to?
Of course I will make a backup of all my data, but i'm assuming i'll have to manually re-install a lot of software that is just way outdated, and i may end up getting issues with drivers, e.g. bluetooth not working or wifi.

i'm thinking either Ubuntu, the latest Mint, or maybe Debian 10.

The usual way would be to either use a WiFi Repeater, or a WiFi Access Point.

I'm personally not a fan of WiFi Repeaters because they lower the bandwidth, but Access Points are more expensive and require extra cabeling.

I was told to retry the Debian install with my Windows drive disconnected, so I did that. Again, the install seemed to work. So I rebooted, and this time I actually got the GRUB boot menu (which I didn't even see last time), but after choosing Debian, I just get the black screen with blinking cursor again. The only real difference this time is that the black screen also has an error — something like:

I don't know if this is a fatal error or if the system should have been able to boot anyway. Based on what I'm reading on other forums, getting stuck at the black screen is probably related to video drivers. If so, maybe this is why I was able to successfully install Ubuntu before, because Ubuntu has proprietary drivers and Debian doesn't...?

Anyway, if it is a problem with drivers, I don't know of any way to fix it because I'm doing a fresh install and, immediately following the install, I see no way of accessing any kind of terminal because it won't give me anything when I boot. And if I need to update my BIOS version or something, then I just can't be fucked to do it, because I already know Ubuntu works on this machine as of a few months ago.

All the advice I can find on other forums is people saying "just run this command bro" as if my black screen with a blinking cursor is actually a working terminal.

Given that I'm just going to go back to trying Ubuntu, my only real question here is just for general knowledge. Is it likely that my GPU or other hardware, purchased circa 2013, are just too old to work properly with Debian 10.0?

go into your control panel, and uninstall as much programs you dont need, and use https://www.ccleaner.com/ to remove temporary files/cache etc to help clean up memory.

or you could get someone to install a lighter operating system which takes up less space, like https://lubuntu.net/

I recently got fibre broadband and a new Sky router. Since setting it up every time I boot my pc I get a ""Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration" message and the internet doesn't work until I reset the router. You are probably correct that it's a proprietary driver that the nerds at Debian won't include. BUT THE HYPOCRITICAL SHIT FUCK PART IS that if you download their netinstall or any other installation ISO, they include it there so you can install with great resolution, but on first boot your display might turn into dogshit (like mine did). Why is this? If you're going to fuck up on first boot, then why have a nice hi-res display during installation? I've had it with Debian. The next time a dist-upgrade fails, and I have to start from scratch, I'm going to some distro that installs and then runs with the same drivers.

How does that even make sense to them? If they can put the illegal shit in the install ISO, why can't they put it in the distro?

Is it really a matter of legality? I think they just don't include the proprietary video drivers because they want everything included in the distro to be open source.

In any case, I am that guy, and I did install Ubuntu 19.04 again. It just works -- I'm posting from it now -- so I guess I'll stick with it. I don't like the default desktop environment but I guess I can try to figure out how to change that.

Regarding Debian, I'm probably just retarded, and maybe I was supposed to install it differently. But I'm just fed up with it, and with the lack of useful information online. I guess I shouldn't expect to find much information with such a generic problem as "it boots to a black screen" but damn. I really wanted to try Debian but the fucker boots to a black void and no user input works except Ctrl-Alt-Del, whereas Ubuntu boots up just fine.

With this in mind, I'll probably try to install Debian again in the future, but now that I have Ubuntu installed again, I might as well try using it. I had installed it once before, which is how I knew it would work, but I didn't really do anything with it. In any case, I have work tomorrow, so I can't really wait for another Debian install to finish. Reading your original post, an error about microcode is most likely drivers. as for dual booting windows should be installed first, and most linux distros will try to avoid installing on the same drive as windows, because it doesn't like to play nicely and windows10 is known for overwriting grub and fucking up your linux install. proper way to install both oses on same drive is to disconnect all other drives, install windows, then your linux distro. if on separate drives, disconnect windows drive and just leave the drive you plan to install linux on, but you will need to run update-grub for it to pick up windows.

tl;dr if you have ubuntu, it's based on debian, just stick with it instead of wasting time, unless you need debian for whatever reason over ubuntu.

you could try linux mint. it's based on ubuntu, more user friendly, but doesn't come preinstalled with amazon shit, it does come preinstalled with stuff but it's useful shit like firefox, libreoffice, media player, etc. no corporation/tracking shit.

If the machines are identical, then yes, you can move a drive from one machine to another and linux will boot and run. The only issues would be things like 32bit vs 64 bit, wrong drives in grub or /etc/fstab, but even then if you use UUIDs or disk labels there will be no issues.

Microshit is simply Microshit, and always has been and always will be. I last messed with XP, back when they said they would allow "infinite" re-installs on the same machine it was activated on, so I wanted to do some experimenting with dual-booting, and found out that "infinite" was actually about 4 before I had to call and beg for forgiveness.

I got the supershieldz one that has a dust remover, alcohol pad, and cloth. I used all of those things obsessively, but if something gets on the adhesive side of the protector it's all over. So you get one chance and that's it.

"Old" IPS-panel monitor broke a few years ago after about 5 years of use. It started flickering pink, teal and white lines.

The flickers made a clicking sound that sounded a bit like electricity sparking. Turning the monitor off and turning it on again halted the flickering for a little while.
I remember ruling out the cables and the two HDMI ports.

IIRC for some broken monitors there's a specific piece of hardware that can be replaced with a spare part and some soldering. Assuming it's somehow still available for my model, what part would that be?

this whole orderal started with a simple naming convenience (because of course it did), back when storage devices were measured in thousands of bytes, convenient units were 2^10 bytes (1024) and 2^20 bytes (1048576), which are pretty close to 1,000 (k) and 1,000,000 (M), so for convenience, they called 2^10 "k/kilo bytes", or kB, and 2^20 "M/mega bytes", or MB
this is wrong, since kilo and mega already meant 10^3 and 10^6 respectively, but they were practically close with such small storage devices, so were convenient to use (ex. 65536 bytes = 64kiB = 65.536kB)
nowadays, that small difference has added up to the point where a single consumer hdd is a /trillion/ bytes off, they should have move onto the computer-specific binary prefix a long time ago

I currently use a 1TB HD as my sole drive, partitioned into a small C drive for OS and "normal" programs, and D drive for everything else (games, movies). I'm planning to get a SSD to modernize it and my purpose is to use for OS and games I play more often.

SSDs don't care one way or the other whether they're partitioned. Sometimes people leave space unpartitioned just to make sure the drive isn't ever full, but it doesn't matter on modern drives. Your setup is pretty ideal for splitting though. Just clone everything except D: to the SSD and make sure D: gets assigned that drive letter and you're good to go.

you're misunderstanding why you shouldn't completely fill it
completely filling a volume on a partition which is 85% the size of the disk, is just as bad as compeltely filling a volume on a partition which is 100% of the size of the disk, because it's the fact the volume is full which causes fragmentation/write amplification, not the disk itself
by leaving space unpartitioned, you're just making it easier to run low on space, you're actively making the situation more likely to happen
if you want to keep yourself from filling a volume by accident, set a filesystem quota (wouldn't really recommend it, since hitting a quota can result in data loss, when there's still space left, it's better to run the disk a bit too full momentarily, than it is to just drop i/o when things are getting tight)

Yes, that's pretty much all you need to take away from that. Two hard drives is fine, make sure they're attached to different computers in different rooms, set up network sharing and use freefilesync.

Ideally you never have all copies of any important data attached to the same PC at once. Too easy for electrical shock, malware etc to fuck something up. Network sharing is easy, FFS will sync files, not programs or OS, which are easy to replace. Having things separated over a network goes a long way towards isolating any problems that come up.

i have read that ssds are not good for cold storage purposes though, they don't hold data for as long, i'm not sure if there's a real, practical disadvantage there, though

Thanks for this tip, honestly I more meant I won't really have either drive plugged in constantly. More just when I want to access some chinese cartoons or the like, and if I want to sync them then I'll probably be doing it both on the same machine. I often like working off one device anyway.

Honestly I haven't either, I just sort of thought this was how things were.

Well the data I can't redownload is about 60GB, with the series I'd maybe like to include so it saves me the hassle of redownloading it jumps to about 250GB.

My options were this

A) Buy a small capacity SSD, put the 60GB of files onto there
B) Buy a large capacity SSD, put the combined 250GB of files onto there

But you guys have presented me with option C
C) Buy another external hard drive and just backup the first drive completely.

You think that's better? For some reason I'm more reluctant with that because of the failure. Some of the 60GB data is program data and shit from the C: drive of an older PC I want to keep around

I'm no expert but HDDs have been around for so long people learned how to deal with its spinny nature. SSD doesn't have mechanical components but its circuitry is delicate and it's a fairly new technology that haven't been mastered yet.

these suggests they will be the only copy of the data, this is not a backup, and is no safer than what you have right now

this is a backup, something independent of the primary storage which contains a second copy of that data
don't worry about a raid, it's clearly overkill for your needs
with such basic requirements, even something as simple as an external usb3 hdd which you sync weekly will do the trick
just remember that important data needs to be on BOTH the computers' disk AND the external one for it to be a backup, the idea is that if you make a mistake, get hit with ransomware, the computer explodes, one of the disks die, etc, etc, you still have the other copy

If using the framework for what intel wanted to do back with their softGPUS however, probably about 128~256 ish. CPUs are designed to have massive general task capacity and GPUs for specific workloads so again it's apples to oranges, as "softGPUS" are not at all used for the same things as real GPUS.

It eliminates physical proximity risks, raid array failure, and malware if you catch it before the next sync. Also FFS notifies you of differences to file versions, and if suddenly you have 50000 changes, you can have a quick looksie before pulling the trigger. There are also tools that do outright differential backups over a network.

It highly depends on what you are doing, but with those numbers you aren't going to see benefit from keeping the 8gb of pleb memory around other than maybe running a virtual machine. 16GB is going to be better in almost all other cases.

Go into the directory you want to empty.
On the top left click "File" and open a new powershell window.
Paste the command there, it'll empty the directory you are currently in indicated on the left side of the powershell window.
Make sure it's the one you actually want to empty.

Does Windows 8.1 asks for a serial key during installation? I'm thinking about giving it a try, since I always only used Windows XP and 7.

However you want to phrase it, I basically read your advice as "use raid instead of a separate second copy". It's absolutely fair to assume he would read it that way. That is a solution that is inherently very risky. Even if he halfasses this, it eliminates several risk factors.

So it may be a bit "closer" to your solution, but still much better than it.

C) does offer a backup, but initially my plan wasn't even to have a backup. It was just moving the important files onto an SSD and backing up certain shows just to save me the pain of redownloading. But an SSD isn't really safer, is it?

I think what it is is that I actually use the HDD, but if I moved the important files to an SSD, I wouldn't really be accessing the SSD much, so it'd be safer because it's rarely in use, right?
But now you've got me thinking of just making a whole backup instead of buying an SSD, and it doesn't sound like a bad idea. A lot of the stuff is redownloadable, but if I was going to buy an SSD just to move 60GB of files on, I'm better off just buying another HDD and doing a full backup better, right?

I wasn't too fussed about a backup this whole time just because like I said I can get most of the stuff back. But I really did think SSD's were miles ahead in terms of safety and just wouldn't fail

I wanna use the proprietary nvidia drivers but they seem to break my KDE. Firefox is fine but every fond and button is too big and it looks horrible. Free drivers work fine. Anyone know the fix to this ? My usual solution don't seem to work

I would recommend not using an Arch derived operating system with stuff other than the free software. Bleeding edge and slow lumbering proprietary software don't mix especially with GPU drivers. I highly recommend either fedora or a debian derived distribution more towards debian with ubuntu if you need to have prop drivers.

flash drives are usually bottom-of-the-barrel flash, they're the least reliable storage out there

yes it was, the idea was somewhere safe to store data, storing data in only one place is not safe, backups are safe, hence, wanting to store data safely means wanting a backup

if i were you, i'd get an ssd, but for main storage (they are faster, after all), and use a hdd for periodically making copies to

yes, usb flash drives, the small thumb-sized ones
either way, an external hdd is probably cheaper for 250GB+ (not that i've checked usb flash drive prices in many years)

Yeah while the series and stuff I mentioned takes about 240GB, I've actually used about 500GB on my 1tb hard drive.
I might just buy a 2TB Drive and use my current 1tb one as a backup.

Quick silly question, best way to get the data over would just be to copy and paste the files over, right? Then after that filesync?
