Applies to Canada just as readily and we have to figure out how to do this better. Relying on familial support won't be enough, especially with changing demographics, workplace trends/education debts for millennials & increasingly complex patients.

Things that are hard to adjust to: long work days, feeling clueless all too often, using limited free time to learn all those things you didn't know Things that make it worthwhile: when your patient asks if you can still be there with them when they get moved to another floor 😭

The really nice thing about waking up early is that sometimes, it means I can take a nap and wake up before noon still. Probably not going to happen again for at least another two months, but I appreciate today.

On that note, I'm feeling extra grateful today for the friends, teachers and mentors I've had who supported me, challenged me and made me feel like all that is possible even when I couldn't see it. I've been so lucky to have had so many people invest time to help me grow 💖

Interesting piece about thoughtful communication - our training is to spot potential illness, but spotting & encouraging strengths and minding the burden of knowledge is arguably just as important in our interactions.

Not to get political, but I can't help but compare how Nova Scotia and Ontario treat education 🤔 Education is so important to help people break the poverty cycle, and it's so weird to me how differently provincial governments within the same country approach it.

''If your MCAT score can be predicted based on your postal code or race, then clearly there's something beyond just individual intelligence.'' A welcome change - looking forward to seeing this play out 😊

Driving adventures: yesterday I tried to drive to the supermarket, missed the turn into the parking lot, couldn't find safe time to change lanes to turn back/try again until I was too close to home and went back without groceries. Today, I made it.

Well written. In response to pressure to discharge, has “back to baseline” distracted us from asking why is that their baseline, when it clearly is not normal. At Baseline | NEJM

Car shopping + paying tuition in the same time frames is a weird feeling because I now realize that the 2 semesters of learning that I've done here are (apparently) equivalent to 2 used cars. !!

... Debate and discuss is so, so important, don't get me wrong. Many amazing ideas that made society more just were initially unacceptable and we do have to keep an open mind. Just want to encourage everyone to be mindful of what ideas we put forward and their potential impact.

... Of the sense of discomfort I occasionally feel with 'devils advocacy' in discussions. Definitely feels sometimes like that's a strategy to keep bringing up perspectives into public eye without 'pushback' from personally endorsing the idea. Free speech and the ability to...

On that note, I've never heard of the Overton window before and I found it an interesting concept - range of ideas considered publically acceptable. Article describes needing to shift the window to make these ideas more palatable over time. Gives me vocab and understanding...

Great journalism - horrifying lack of empathy being described with neo Nazi groups of Canadian citizens. Please read! At least for me, it's easy to attribute this kind of belief to lack of education or exposure to diverse ideas/people but that's not what's reflected here.

Dear Ontario, Your periodic reminder that health > healthcare. Value comes from upstream. Public health, kids, education, food security, income, housing. Things that, the better they work, the less we notice.
