My latest w/ for : 's Coming Forever War. A nuanced take to 's offensive that breaks down why viewing this as "an army's assault on militias" is ill-thought. Backing one militia against another is not an answer either.

That doesn't mean they're content w/ GNA's performance either, neither before or during this war. Many are considering multiple models for a reform/reshuffle (without necessarily resorting to violent means) now. Useful reminder that Libyan actors, East/West/South are rational.

Tripoli/Misrata factions learned from past mistakes & have a deep aversion to "Islamists". This is epitomized by post-April 4 dynamics, w/ statements stating they'd mobilize only w/ Sarraj's go-ahead. Prospects below may occur are slim. Prospects of a deal w/ Haftar, slimmer.

I’m in an Uber in Los Angeles and my driver is an old man from Libya. He asked me what I do for work and what I was doing in LA and I said I’m a comedian, and he replied: uh, so like, a clown. And oh boy do I feel at home right now.

on : "this peace must be achieved by Europeans without foreign interference. Europe is the continent of enlightenment, where we love liberty [...] reason & freedom for males & females alike". I'm assuming other continents and countries are less worthy though.

"You’ve been trying to prove that the provenance of his funds was illicit, there has not been a single clue of a single time of any amount coming from any official Libyan business" That's because it wasn't illicit. Ghadaffi literally owned the state.

Until further clarifications come out (if they ever do), one major daunting takeaway from 's Javelin scandal is that, contrary to popular wisdom, the notion that Western "liberal" states wouldn't be the ones breaking the arms embargo on may well be ill-conceived.

Over a 100 days after 's offensive, it's startling to see a "presidential candidate" coming out of the woodwork to endorse it publicly (especially since 's "success" will invariably entail significant destruction, both to 's social fabric & as a capital)

New survey by Diwan (the polling firm used by many international orgs) shows high levels of opposition (majorities in west & south , 38% in east) to the Tripoli war sparked by Haftar’s offensive. When asked to name someone capable of ruling Libya, 60% could not name anyone

This image will go down in history. New video shows shows Mike Pence callously observing and turning his back on severe overcrowding of men in cages at a detainment facility in Texas.

An excellent thread that gives a glimpse of 's war economy. Musheer Market (where black market transactions occur) represents Libya's official economy to many, as the official rate is a mirage to citizens. Sidenote, if you haven't given Nabih a follow, you should already.

I find it really weird that people erase 2012 & 2013 from their minds. & have a lot of responsibility in what's going on in , but they didn't "bomb it back to the stone age". This lazy take has become the apologia for those backing authoritarianism.

THREAD On June 3, 2019, there was a massacre on the streets of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. This is the story of that massacre, told through the phone cameras of those who kept filming, even as they came under live fire.

I recently met a Srebrenica “survivor”. She quietly explained, without drama or rancour, how 4 generations of male relatives were murdered. All of them. She is a lovely, gentle but shattered human being. Survival isn’t really the word. Some replies to the thread below disgust me.

Despicable disrespectful and deluded criminal groups who prey on these moments when in fact the greatest respect should be shown. A long list of cowardly acts of exploitation. and 'ns deserve better than this
