Odd question: How difficult would it have been too do some reverse engineering on this kind of platform, and actually produce a ground to air system?
-
Much more sensible to sell it (As they were trying to) then use the $$ to obtain, say, some RPGs from the Balkans
-
Or continue to become Lords of War by importing STG-44's from Syria, and then reselling them to collectors at an extreme markup!

Is the sandy-coloured AUG Omani?
-
Did you spot the 9x19 Para SMG variant there too mate? An unusual selection of AUGs.
-
Yeah, crazy innit. Lots of Austrian guns.
-
9x19... Just remind me... Isn't that an illegal caliber for civilians there? I mean not that I'd know...

You sure that's a Matra 530F?
-
Yes, atm, unless the reference pics I am looking at are actually for for the D. The info I see online says the Qataris received F too

530F it's missile for Mirage F.1, therefore probably this group planned to sell this missile to Iran or Libya, which have some Mirage F.1, but because of the sanctions they cannot legally buy weapons for these fighters..
-
The Iranian fleet (Iraqi refugees) had their sensitive weapon systems uninstalled in Iraq before they took off (standard protocol). Therefore, they can't operate any weapons other than their cannons. In any case, Iran doesn't have any 530s, and won't spend money on one missile.
-
This is the other side of the question. I consider this case from the subjective point of view of this group, that is, what they planned, since few peoples know details..
-
I understand. Like you, I'm also not completely aware of their intention. I was trying to give some context to these rumors and how the plan to sell the missile to Iran (if it was in fact considered) would invariably fail.
-
Do you really believe that such a missile can be operated from a jet for which it has not been authenticated?
-
That would need a grueling process of radar/avionics and aerodynamics/separation integration with the new platform to be able to operate.
