    Interesting thread on how Turkey talked itself into buying an air defence system from the country which was abusing Turkish airspace

    No genuine effort shown by both sides to resolve the S-400 crisis. Both thought the other was bluffing. • US was wrong to underestimate Turkey’s resolve. Failed to understand…

    It's almost like China is trolling Trump. Data just out shows that its trade surplus with the US hit another record high in June: $331bn (on a 12-month rolling basis). That's 30% higher than when Trump took office and 12% higher than at the start of the trade war.

    However, as a share of each country's population, US (with ca 6%) comes way behind Australia & Israel (more than 10%) as well as Canada (ca 8%) and level-pegs with UK (ca 6%).Sweden gets close (ca 5%). US only looks good in comparison to Germany (ca4%), France(ca3%), Spain, Italy

    Under what legal basis can the US initiate UN snapback sanctions on Iran? According to UNSCR 2231 any "JCPOA participant State" can do so. But the US is no longer a participant.

    The U.S. can unilaterally invoke the snapback. That’s indisputable. The question about whether it should — or, if so, when? — is a reasonable debate.

    Bismarck would have frowned at such American 'Unrealpolitik', particularly at a time when building bridges between the US and India is a strategic no-brainer, whether or not India continues to buy Russian weapon systems. Spoiler: India's foreign policy is quite Bismarckian

    Spy satellites have been acquired by many countries, some with substantially less financial throw-weight than the UAE. But you hardly hear about them -unless the launch vehicle fails as was the case for the UAE's venture.
