Blistering anti-western rhetoric has been a cornerstone of previous anniversaries, and for some it will be persuasive to argue that the S-400 acquisition (and the sanctions to follow) were part of a broader, deliberate plan by Erdogan to irreversibly sever Turkey from the west.

And, Turkey should not be written off - it is home to a growing political movement that opposes (for other reasons, namely economic mismanagement and widespread corruption) the kind of one man rule that made this sanctions-triggering, possibly economy-crushing blunder possible
