Important zero day fix, Waterfox for Android and a new logo.

Unfortunately Waterfox has been required to change its logo. The new logo harks back to previous Waterfox designs and encompasses everything that Waterfox is. Feedback from previous logos has also been taken into consideration and should be much more appealing to everyone. Enjoy!

📝 What’s new in Waterfox 56.2.11?

  • Security fix for CVE-2019-11707.
  • Fixed issues that prevented themes from AMO installing.
  • Added some more overrides for popular websites.
  • Fixed issues where the Gecko Media Plugins were not downloading, preventing websites that required DRM such as Netflix from working.
  • Enabled support for JavaScript modules.

⚠️ If you find that websites are not working properly after upgrading, PLEASE delete your browser cache, this will resolve a lot of website issues.

Waterfox for Android

You can now install the latest version of Waterfox for Android from the Google Play store.

Get it on Google Play

Website Changes

There have been some behind-the-scenes changes to the Waterfox website. A big one is the removal of Google Analytics! The comment system has also moved away from Disqus to Commento, a privacy-focused commenting system.

Support Waterfox

I’d really like to thank everyone who has donated so far, it’s so incredible seeing how supportive everyone is! I should have some time now to go through all the messages and reply :-)

If you’d really like to help Waterfox out, please consider using the default search (Bing) with adblock disabled on it, it would be such a huge show of support! The default search is fairly privacy friendly.

Enjoy the latest releases and have a wonderful week!

I love this new logo ! It's subtle. It's stylish with its colour gradient. This is one of the most beautiful of my dock. The previous W was a little too big. Tastes and colours...

I would love to see the Firefox option to eliminate the separate search bar and use the address bar as both. Is that something you cold make happen in next release or is it possible it is there and I missed it?

Jayel

It's already there. Right-click the bar, choose customize, remove the search bar. You have all the search junk right there in the address bar.

I'm not a fan of it, but the choice is there.

May be a problem with your Waterfox profile. Try creating a new profile, testing the extension and if it works port over the files from the older profile. Look up "Fixed Firefox" and the directions for everything are on the 'Profiles' page.

Alex, thank you so much for continuing to bang out improvements to Waterfox! It's all I will accept on either Linux or Windows for extended, "real" browsing!

On a sadder note, I still can't install Waterfox for Android. :{ It doesn't even show up when I search for it, and when I either go to the link above in the desktop version of google play, or wishlist it and go to it in Android, it continues to say "this app is incompatible with your device"! Why?! While my Samsung Galaxy S5, running Android 6.0.1 (which, by the way, more than meets the minimum requirements Waterfox lists on its google play page) may not be a spring chicken, I have literally never seen this before with any other major application.Certainly not Firefox, Dolphin, Chrome, the Samsung browser, or any of the many advanced, graphically demanding games I have installed. My phone has plenty of space, and installs and runs all the above applications fine.I mentioned this in the comments of the last release. Please look into this, Alex. Thank you.

Here is an image of what I see, btw: https://i.imgur.com/oMjO1kL.png

If I hit Install, it fiddles around for a while and then eventually produces a dialog where my only real option is 'cancel'.

Alex, can you compile Waterfox 68 for Android also for the armeabi-v7a arch as you did with the 56.1.0 version? There's still quite a few out here with non-64 bit mobile CPUs. That would be really awesome!

I'm curious, what made you change the previous logo? Was it too... Anubis-y?

On an unrelated note, is there a way to toggle between using the OSs native emoji font and twemoji? I'm running Windows 10 and god are the emoji ugly on this system

why is proxy-toggle addon no longer working? This is exactly what I wanted to avoid by using waterfox - on top of NOT being prompted for friggin updates all day long like in those AntiWares which so many ppl are using.

I guess, this can be solved by the "do not update" setting, not sure what I used before.

I now found out that proxy-toggle shows the ugly yellow exclamation mark but works - more or less - nevertheless. Another unneeded warning. But at least it works and is super simple like it is supposed to be.

good thing: your switchover to Commento link and dump of Disqus! well done!

.HTM and .HTML file icons have now got worse when Waterfox is the default browser.

At least with 56.2.10, they showed with an icon, the old Waterfox icon (not the one with a W), which was not very pretty but at least it was an icon, but now with 56.2.11 they show as blank icon - totally blank.

I LOVE the new logo. As much as I (used to) love Firefox and Mozilla, they never ONCE made a logo as unique or beautifully designed and indicative of what it does than the new Waterfox logo. You continue to impress, Alex. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping to make the dream we have of an actually Open "open" browser (unlike the closed "Open" Firefox v57+) a continuing reality. <3 :)

This logo is the best so far, i really like it. It looks more watery and more modern. Maybe it is a good idea to list, i.g. in the history/blog page https://www.waterfox.net/blog/ all the logo's and why they were changed, e.g. to which other logo it resembled too much or which company complained. No need to go into details, discussions whether the complaint was far-fetched or why you were not aware of the infringement.

Will Add-on interface be stable?

I noticed the proxy-toggle kinda stopped working when I thought Waterfox is not making the same mistake as firefox by dropping compatibility with older style add-ons or webExtension or whatever they call it these days.

Will the old add-ons all keep working at least within the waterfox ver.56 range?

About a month ago, some https websites stopped loading, and the message: “The owner of webmaster.yandex.ru did not set up their website correctly. To protect your information from being stolen, Waterfox did not connect to this website. This site uses the HTTP Forced Secure Connection (HSTS) to indicate that Waterfox should only connect to it through a secure connection. As a result, adding an exception to this certificate is not possible. " Among these sites there are very reliable, for example, yandex.ru. How can I go on a blocked link bypassing the ban?

Maybe all the people that make free stuff will suddenly require others to change their logos who are making stacks of money off of such things.

zdayone

The fact that the icon can be changed on whim like that, shows how easy it is to actually permit users to choose which icon they like. Just like the many icon directories you can find in windows, there’s absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t be allowed to choose which icon we want, not simply one that we’re told is best for us. This is what dictatorships do, by forcibly subjecting their own ideas onto the people while at the same time taking away free choice and should you disagree or have a bone to pick, your voice is silenced, deleted, removed, de-platformed, etc...

I mean really, we’re talking about the ability to configure a logo, something Microsoft itself already permits its users to do. Dang it! I thought the corporate thugs over at Redmond were extremely authoritarian!——-Damn man, this really sucks!

The logo change was almost certainly a legal issue, judging by (a) the wording "Waterfox has been required to change its logo" and (b) the fact that a certain other logo with a fox head and a limb gingerly sticking out is a trademark.

I can't understand why it's so hard to deliver the three icons and a simple toggle to switch between them, I mean Waterfox is all about options, isn't it? And as you can see in the comment section every time the logo changes, many people are upset and want the old one back. Why can't give us the option here, Alex?

This is a discussion section for the above items. Anyone is allowed to express their opinion on the above subjects. The founder of the Waterfox also thinks the logo is relevant. Maybe start your own discussion topic if you want to talk about something else instead of creating negativity.

Well, I have been complimentary most times but not this time.

First, the good part : the logo. I would have preferred it more blue, but it is still a great alternative given you had to change the old one. Well done.

The change from Disqus to Commento is a big mistake on many point of view :

1) Stability. One moment we have Reddit, the next we have Disqus, and now Commento. This lack of stability for me would make me extremely reluctant to recommend Waterfox at corporate level. It smacks of geekiness rather than practicality and ease of use for users.

2) Zero testing on switching to Commento. Half the window is masked (bad testing) and I have no faith in the fact that there is no double-checking of my email address before I can post a message - why do I even need to put an email address then ? I can put jjjj@jjjjjjjjj.com and it will work. Poor choice.

3) More on Commento : no bold, underline, no ability to show screenshots, no ability to REPLY. Etc... It is an incredibly poor choice of commenting platform - It is the equivalent of using a plain text telegrams system in this age of smartphones, social media. Privacy in the context of commenting on Waterfox is almost totally unneeded - choosing a little followed system when trying to have a product becoming a major, or at least a good middle-ground player, is a contradiction in terms.

None of the above gives a good impression, particularly when this is the landing page after the installation of a new version. Aside from the new logo I give it a Zero.

56.2.11 : it has a tendency to freeze for a second or two, to the point that we have had to revert to 56.2.10.1 on some PCs.

Not good.

well, granted I'm using firefox to write this since waterfox kinda botches the page. But I am always willing to pay this price to get away from Big Data. Commento is much more like free software. Likewise, gitlab is better than github by MS. Reddit I strongly dislike, they always get in the way with their censorship and all. Unacceptable.

OK now I'm trying this with Ungoogled-Chromium which I managed to compile. bold face works but the login is mighty sketchy, tho its working for the moment. wonder why bold is not working in the foxes...
